Family folklore helped alot.
My mother-in -law is still alive and remembered some of the family accounts to us over the years. Constant and 3 of his children were quite prominent in Vigo county history, and I was able to pick up clues in local biographical histories. Obtaining death certificates was a great help, because on the back of each, I found their parents names and place of birth.
By the way, Elisha and Martha were married on June 10, 1828 in Deerfield, Warren, Ohio.
I wonder too, why people of that time gave different information on thier backrounds. Perhaps as their circumstances and community changed, they worked to fit in.
I use One World Tree, and have found alot of conflicting information, ie. dates and places of origin.
Our greatest mystery is what happened to Frederick Mancourt, our original American ancestor. We find nothing about him from the time he applied for citizenship in 1830 in Philidephia. In the 1880 Terre Haute census we find an 83 yr old John Mancourt, is it the same man, why is there no trace of him before or after that census.

Hi again,
As for the info, I'd like to know where you found Martha Ann Turner..marriage to Scofield?
And I note that Sarah said her father was born in NY, not OH. And Ada says IRE.
How did you find Elisha?
I wish these folks would keep their stories straight, don't you? Makes it so hard for us!

Well, as far as we can tell, Ada's father was Elisha, born in Ohio. We have traced the Scofield family to the American colonies however; the Scofield's did emigrate from England. Haven't been able to find much on Martha Ann Turner Scofield, perhaps her family was from Ireland and I'll keep looking. Yes, we are researching the same family, my husband is Constant and Sarah's great-great grandson.
Let's share family info. We don't know much about the May family other than the fact that Constant was very fond of Edwin and named his youngest son after him.
Sincerely,
Barb

I will be glad to e-mail you with some of the information that I have. I am still trying to make a connection between the families in Paris, Edgar County; Danville, Vermilion County; and Marshall, Clark County, Illinois as well as Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. I have found a lot of birth, marriage, and death notices as well as census information and a few biographies, so it should be fun to make all of the connections. I am hoping that someone else in the family will get in touch. I will write for permission to include the e-mail addresses of those I know. Eleanor

How wonderful to hear from you Eleanor. I had almost given up hope of finding anyone who had even heard of this line of my family much less actually came from it!
I only just learned of Emily's maiden name a couple of months ago. The spelling had been mangled down the line so by the time it got to me the spelling was "LUSCHEV" not LeSeure.
I contacted St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church who referred me to the Sisters of Providence who archive some of the old parish records. She provided me with Emily's last name of LeSeure and that of her parents Joseph LeSeure and Jeanne Felecitie Hurel.. She also included a few baptisms of Emily and her husband James Sheern's children. There was only 1 additional LeSeure and that was a William LeSeure. I do not know when or how Emily arrived in the US, if she came alone or with her parents and possible siblings?
I have very little information since I just found the correct spelling and the names of her parents, but I am on a mission with these new clues. Maybe together we can ties all these Indiana and Illinois LeSeure's together! Please email me at

I am interested in knowing if Emily was a full sister to Francis Eugene Leseure of Clark Co. IL. His parents are listed in the Clark County History of 1883 as Joseph and Felicity Hurel Leseure. I have been doing some research on this family in Clark, Edgar, and Vermilion Co. IL as well as Vigo Co. IN and would appreciate your input.

In 2001 I posted a message about Daniel Hugh Maynard being born in the 1830s, but I have recently found a record which indicates his birth as 20 Aug 1818 and d. 6 Dec 1870. His first marriage was to Purmelia, Parmelia or Amelia Heady (Heddy) b. 18 Jul 1827 and d 1 Feb 1858. They had children Mary Elizabeth b. 19 Feb 1850 and Benjamin b. 22 Feb 1853. His second marriage was to Elizabeth Biggs b. 30 Nov 1832 and d. 22 Mar 1873. They had children John b. 8 Dec 1860, Margaret Ella b. 1865 and David b 1866 or 1867.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone with information.
Can you tell us where in Illinois the younger children were born? KSM
