Hi,
There were Hauger's and Curry's in Sullivan Co., IN, county south of Terre Haute. My great-uncle's widow married second a Chauncy Hauger in Sullivan Co. A township is named after Curry's.

Hi Fran,
My G-grandmother was Florence Christinia Colglazier, b. 1850 IN. Her mother was Rebecca Hauger, b. 1823 IN. Her father was Jacob Hauger, b. 1801 KY and moved to Washington Co, Indiana before 1821. Does this tie to your Haugers?

David,
Thanks for posting the Rowan burials in Mewhinney --just proved to me that I am descended from none of them, and helps to explain why the different pieces of evidence I had didn't quite fit together.

My William M. Donnelly was married to Angelina. I'm not sure of her last name, but she was born in England. They had at least 4 children, Ida, Leroy, William, and George. Sounds as if your Donnelly's are a different line. If there's a connection, it's at an earlier date. Both William and Angelina wer born ca. 1857.

It would have been a logical burial place for Lost Creek residents living in the south part of the township. Mewhinney Cemetery is just south of the Lost Creek, Riley Twp line, which if I remember correctly, is Margaret Ave which runs parrellel to Moyer Road.Margaret does not go all the way east because of the mine. The cemetery is on a gravel Road running south off the Lower Bloomington Road thru the old mine. There are many marked graves in the Old Section on the West side of the road. I wish I could give you the road number, but the map I have precedes all the mining done there. Recently we marked the graves of Ezra Morrison Lowe and his wife Sarah Oliver who were pioneers in Riley Township. At that time the grass was mowed and the Cemetery looked nice. The Vigo County Library probably has a list of the markers out there. Mary

Mr.Jones,
As a young boy, I grew up in the country, about 3 miles northeast of Riley, on Moyer Road. As boys often do, we explored the surrounding woods and countryside all the time. One day, my brother and I came upon a Mewhinney Cemetary . It was situated on a knoll surrounded by a bean field. It was west of Moyer Road and north of a creek that ran east-west.
As I recall, there were approximately 12-15 graves at the site . In particular was the grave of a Captain John Mewhinney who died in the 1860's. The monument was about 6 feet in height and the other graves surrounded his. At that time (1962-4?),the site was in very good condition- no vandalism and not too overgrown. I hope that this provides you with some insight.
Please reply to my email address if you think that I can provide further info.
Sincerely,
Bob Stuckey

Peter Murphy came from the County of Cork, Ireland, in approx. 1840.
He was nine years old at the time of his arrival. An older brother came across with him from Cork, but this brother went down into Florida to settle.
Peter was welcomed to America by an older sister who met him in Boston. Peter’s sister had come to America earlier and settled in Terra Haute, Indiana.
Peter’s schooling and early years are unknown to me at this time.
At the start of the Civil War, Peter being about 20 years of age, enlisted and served in Company E. of the 26th Indiana Infantry. Peter Probably served in Kentucky and Tennessee.
He was captured and held in a prison camp, later released after signing a statement not to fight again.
Returning home he enlisted in another mans name, for which he received four hundred dollars, it was a common practice for a person of wealth to assign another to go in your place.
Peter was again captured, placed in another prison camp, where he remained until the end of the war. He related to the family that his survival at the camp rested with his using the corn meal the camp provided to make corn bread, instead of eating it raw, which many of the prisoners did. There was dysentery and many deaths at the camp.
At wars end the guards left their posts, leaving the prisoners to fend for themselves.
He walked from northern Alabama to Terra Haute, Indiana, near home he came on fresh baked pies cooling on a window sill, naturally he took one. He later came face to face with the lady who owned the pie and was recognized by her as the soldier.
Peter then met Rachel Foster his future wife, they had 8 or 9 children, my father everett was the youngest, Peter died when my father was 9 years old. Everett was bitter in later life for being placed in a orphanage, when all the other children were kept with grandmother Rachel, he stated he didn’t think he ate that much.
Rachel (Foster) Murphy was born in 1850, and died in1922 in Marshaltown, Iowa, at the soldiers and sailors home. She was first denied a GAR burial in Glendale Cemetery at Des Moines, Iowa because Indiana had listed Peter as a A.W.O.l., because he did not wait at the prison camp to be released from the army. This was straightened out and a plot and stone were provided. Rachel is buried in the GAR section, near the front entrance of Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. Stone reads: Rachel, wife of Peter Murphy, Co. E. Indiana Infantry , 1850 - 1922.
Peter is believed to be buried in Virgo County, Indiana, where Terra Haute is the County seat.
Everett, my father, left the orphanage when he was 14 years old, traveling across Illinois and Iowa to the Chairton-Albia area, working as a farm Laborer.

I have no information, but I have looked for my gggparents for a while now, I have had a few hits in the McKeehen spelling, a few in the McKeehan spelling , and even McKeen, just keep all your options open. Happy Hunting.
I'm guessing that you are asking about Alexander Rowan 1821 - 1904. There is
only one Mewhinney Cemetery, in Riley Township and that is where Alexander
is at. Mewhinney is in fairly good condition with some overgrowth and
knocked over stones.

I just received a death certificate for an ancestor who died in Lost Creek
Township and it says he was buried 29 Apr 1904 in Mewhinney Cemetery. Are
there two Mewhinney Cemeteries? One in Riley Township (south of Bloomfield
Road) and one in Lost Creek Township (near Seelyville)? If he died in Lost
Creek Township, the latter seems more likely. Does anyone out there have
any idea which would be the likely place of burial at that time? Any ideas
on the condition of the cemetery today?
