Joseph D. Deak Jr. of Vigo Co Indiana was killed October 24, 1944, while serving in the South Pacific during World War II.
He is officially listed as missing or buried at sea and his name appears on the “Tablets of the Missing” at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. We are seeking information regarding his military and civilian life and especially to locate family members still living so we can send them the free photographs of the grave site if he is buried here or the beautiful memorial where their name appears in the case they are Missing in Action or Buried at Sea.
I am a retired Hoosier from Madison County Indiana residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. We are seeking family and military information of nearly a thousand servicemen from Indiana killed in the South Pacific during World War II. There are 17,206 Americans buried here and thousands more that are missing or buried at sea and are honored on the “Tablets of the Missing”. Please visit our website to see the beautiful memorial located in Manila, Philippines.
http://fizkid.tripod.com/
We visited the cemetery as visitors and left with a mission in our heart. We have been taking photographs of the graves of the Indiana servicemen buried here and have been uniting them (at no charge) with their family members in Indiana and across the United States. To receive the photo of your family member, neighbor or friend all you need is a working email address. Please help us find the families that might be still living of the men that gave their lives for our freedoms.
Our project is only successful because of teamwork and your contributions are noted on our website. If you wish to help us we will be pleased to add your name to our ACKNOWLEDGMENT page. The obituaries usually did not appear till to three months after the death date. These are the most helpful in finding the families.
If you are not a genealogist you can help by just picking up the telephone directory and find someone with the same last name and give them a call. It has worked many times.

The Vigo County Indiana Public library has a marriage index that lists copies of the marriage applications. See http://165.138.44.13/marriage/groomlast.asp and enter the name Turner on the form.
There are 3 marriage applications for Clayton Turner. The first lists his parents as the Turner family. The 2nd two lists his parents as George McGuire and Grace Foster.
The library also has an obituary index - see http://165.138.44.12/0017.asp and enter Mc Guire into the form. There is a George age 74 listed with an obit on March 12, 1917 page 2 of the Trib. Mrs Grace Mc Guire age 28 is listed with an obit on July 12, 1917 on page 2 of the Trib.
There is a link on the bottom of the obituary site that provides additional info on requesting obituaries.

My great-grandmother was Augusta Reinhard- Lorenz. She was married to Henry Lorenz. Their oldest son was Adolph Fredrick Lorenz b, 1856 in Crawsfordsville, Indiana.
Augusta was born 1837 in Nassau, Germany and died in Crawfordsville about 1868 of heatstroke. It is understood that Adolph Fredrick moved to Indianapolis, about 1870, where he worked Allison Co.

I have one of these books that my husband purchased as a present for me. I will ask him if he knows where he can get another one.
Do you have relatives in Fontanet?
Thanks to all who responded, you're all great. Apparently the Reuben Mars
whose date of death I was provided, matches a Reuben Mars from Rhode Island.
Unfortunately, not my Reuben. I was hopeful due to the date of date that
this might be my lost gggrandfather.
Just for information, since I didn't provide it in my initial request(wasn't
sure it was pertinent), Reuben was the son or grandson of William Mars,
early 1818 settler in Terre Haute, first magistrate, bank courier, butcher,
etc. (See Vigo County Histories). William is found on the 1850 census living
with Reuben Mars in Clayton County, Iowa. Reuben and his family are also
found on 1856 Iowa census, but no record after that date. So I was hopeful
from a genealogical point of view that the burial was his. His son George
William Mars, my greatgrandfather, mysteriously re-appears in Vigo County on
the 1880 census, so a gap of 24 years with no records and an absence of 30
pus years from Vigo County.
If related to Mars or interested in more detail, visit Mars Page at
www.ironsgenealogy.com
Thanks again to all who responded.
Mike
Mike,
I see where it says 4526 but sure do not see a cemetery listed. Maybe the
next step is to find a National Military Cemetery site and try to find it that
way. Unless I'm missing it on Ancestry.com but I don't think so.
