Do you have a good account of the battle? Can you give me the source?
Are you related to Dr. Ezra Haslem? As a youth the Haslems' backyard abutted in to the backyard of our first home in Terre Haute. I was fairly good friend with the boys, John and Bill. I ran into Dr. Haslem's daughter a few years ago and she said she was related to Sterling, too. (Was her married name Meharry?) I hope I am wrong but I think she has since passed away.
I told her that I had the original 1920 Terre Haute newspaper which had a nice photo of Sterling when he died. Unfortunately, I did not know where it was then but I have since found it.

Mike McCormick

I related to the Sterling Family. John Tenbrook Sterling is buried here in West Terre Haute's Bethesda Cem. In fact, Mike, you had a reference to him in a recent article. He was a driving a team on Wabash and fell off the wagon (really, not drunk). Wasn't seriously hurt. As I understand it, the actual medal and commendation are on the wall at the bank. I haven't seen it though. I don't know what happened to the Sterling medal. My great-grandmother was a Sterling but she died in the 1940s. I think John Tenbrook Sterling was her older brother or maybe her uncle.
The battle for which Sterling and Ryan were awarded the Medal of Honor was ferocious. It would make a wonderful article.
Thanks for remembering.

Thank you. I have a copy of PINHOOK to BRAZIL, but I want to find more books
if possible, for my family members. It is mainly about the Hendrix Family of
Brazil, and has an article in the back about the Graves Family.
The ORMAN FAMILY HISTORY is about to be reprinted. I don't have a copy of
it, but I plan to get one this time. I am hoping to contact others of the
ORMAN/AUMAN family to let them know it is once more available.

Thank you for your response. I wondered whether or not your were related to lawyer William H. Taber. I was aware that he was a part of the Tabertown Road Tabers/Tabors but I had forgotten that his father was in the horse collar business.
Years ago I put together a file on the American Bank scandal and have come across it not long ago a couple of times. My files are not organized anymore! Eventually, I probably will write a column or two about the major bank scandals here but I have avoided doing so thus far. There were quite a few. I postponed until rather recently doing stories about the scandals which permeated the Roberts administration. I always knew I was going to write those stories because of the impact the election scandals had upon our history and image of our community. I do not feel quite the same about the various bank scandals though there may have been something systemic about the rampant corruption here during the first two decades of the 20th Century.
I suppose you have photos of your great-grandfather Taber. As I am sure you know, there is one in the 1894 Souvenir Art Book of Terre Haute.
One of the fascinations of genealogy is the discoveries you make: soaring achievements and monumental setbacks.
Thanks for sharing!

Message Board Post:
Thanks Mike, for the interesting history.
You asked for my Taber ancestor's given names...
John TABER (1795-1872) was the father of 3 sons and a daughter who moved from Urbana, Ohio to Terre Haute. John was a hatter and a town constable in Urbana. He retired in Terre Haute. His eldest son, Uriah (b. 1835), moved to Terre Haute first by 1864. Uriah's brothers, George W. (b. 1837) and Harrison (b. 1840), and their sister Margaret (b. abt 1845) operated "Taber Brothers" (also found spelled TABOR Brothers), manufacturing horse collars and fly nets. It was located on Second Street between Cherry and Mulberry. When John died, the brothers sold out and Uriah, Harrison and Margaret moved to Alabama briefly, and then to Nashville, TN. Harrison had been a Union soldier when they lived in Ohio.
George W, my ancestor, bought a farm in Lost Creek Twp. and had five sons: William Harrison, George M, Frank August, Herbert Eccles, and Montgomery Elmer.
William Harrison, my great grandfather, was a lawyer and banker, and (airing out the dirty laundry here) as it turns out, a bank embezzler. My father and 2 aunts knew nothing of this, and I only discovered it recently in my family research. His bank was closed by state auditors in December 1911.
George M. was a grade school teacher and principal (what school(s) I am not sure).
Frank August (who spelled his surname TABOR) was a medical doctor, and 2-term county coroner. He served in WWI in the medical corps, and was the first commander of the local VFW.
Herbert Eccles was a farmer and teamster in Lost Creek Twp.
Montgomery Elmer, a druggist, operated the corner establishments at east US 40 and Tabertown Road (drug store, motel & gas station) near Seelyville.
I would like to contact all persons who are researching the ORMAN FAMILY
HISTORY.
I also want to find a copy of PINHOOK to BRAZIL by Nelle Decker Hubbard pub

I have a copy of the 1900 census record for Ennumeration District 111, Mills County, Texas. The household of Gilbert B. Stark includes his wife "Carrie B", born Sept 1864 and "mother-in-law" Hettie Thomas born June 1825. Because these correspond to my records of Carrie B. Trueblood, youngest child of William Trueblood and Hettie Taylor Beauchamp, I believe Hettie (Beauchamp) (Trueblood) Thomas was still living in Texas during the 1900 census.
If I am correct, then what Hettie is buried in Vigo County's Westlawn Cemetery?

Message Board Post:
Sharon, thanks for your interest & info. I have this same info but have been struggling with the dates I've found lots of other date problems in census records but this one the most perplexing.
I, too, have been working the "grandaughter" theory but the dates are really off if JEtma is the mother.
I found Carrie/Carra (finally!) in 1880 census with her husband and mother in law in a blurred & apparently untranscribed entry. They were just married. She was 19 and he was 21. That would put her birth date at 1861. In 1882 they have a daughter, also Carrie, and mother Carra dies shortly thereafter. That whole bit I have corroborated from her husbands bio (he's my ggrandfather). So, if the missing Carra is Julia Etma's daughter, her birthdate seems to be 1874 -- I don't think this works.
I can't find Lucius & Julia in those other years either. I know from a Kansas historical record that Lucius was in Kansas in 1877 -- probably well before as he was appointed a postmaster which means he had to have some connection there and also worked for the railroad. In 1880,Lucius the son is single and living with LS& Julia. I don't know other daughter Mary's situation. Can't find any record of Etma's marriage tho there are several "Beaches" in the area. Divorce is VERY unusual as several of the Beach family are ministers.
Yet another possible, In Topeka in 1880 is Jacob & Mary Haynes both from Indiana with a daughter Carrie however she is 2 years old in 1880! Have not verified Jacob & Lucius are brothers or otherwise related but Jacob is a carpenter, Lucius was a carpenter/boat builder in Vigo as are many other Haynes. So..............
I'm sure your bored with me yammering on....thanks for your help and the Julia E-for-Etma connection. Tho I did find them in "Trees" and in one entry she was Julia Nancy.....Arghhhh!
It's going to take someone from their family who knows if Julia had other children after 1850 or if the missing Carrie/Carra is a granddaughter or niece. Someone was looking for this connection several years ago, but the email link is no longer good.
Thanks again, Kathy

Etma is actually older than Lucius so where is she in 1850?
I think it is possible that Julia (2 in 1850) and Etma are one and the same person. Julia the mother has the middle initial E; Etma? Julia the daughter could have been Julia E also; and called Etma.
The grandson, Charles, was 9 and born in Kansas so the family was either in Kansas in 1870 or still on the move? I can't find them in 1860 or 1870.
