Sherman Mitchell (1868-1928) and his wife Bertha (Walker) moved to Vigo County, Indiana from Illinois about 1892. He had two children (names unknown) in the 1890s. Sherman had a nephew William H. Mitchell who registered for the draft in 1918, while living in Terre Haute. Sherman's parents Jackson Mitchell and Amelia Pettiford were free blacks. My relationship to Sherman is through his mother.

There is a John Gibson, died September 1876 buried in Harpold Cemetery.
Nevins Township, Vigo County, Indiana. Book says dates are hard to read.
Many Gibson's in the cemetery but hard to tell if any were his wives as you
didn't give any names. One gave the name Mary, wife of John but no dates.
There are two John's buried there that are close age wise.
Cemetery is two miles east of Seeleyville, North on 40 two miles, east on
Pettiford Road two miles to cemetery. All of this is from the book and I
have never been there.

George and Bertha Pritchard were the parents of the wife of one of my cousins.
Bertha Leona Pritchard married Charles Kenneth Michael. The Blacketer family
can be found in Parke Co., IN and also in Crawford Co., IN. I am especially
interested in the Michael/Lawson family of Vigo, Clay, Greene, Monroe, and Brown
Co., IN.

Hello I see you also researching the Pritchard Family.. And I can tell this family is hard to research.. We have a George Washington Pritchard from that area and couldn't find anything on him...He married a Bertha E. Blacketer and had several children...In the 1920 Census for Vermillion County, Clinton Twp. it states that he had a Servant named Dyar, Myrtle from Iowa. She was about 17 years old. So maybe there is a link to us but if you happen to see anything in this family plese contact me and if I find something Ill contact you.. Ourfamilyresearch(a)hotmail.com

In Terre Haute, there is the Vigo Co Historical Museum. They are located in the same building as the Historical Society at 1411 S. 6th St, Terre Haute, In 47802. Phone is 812-235-9717. I know that keep records of what comes in by the date and whom the donor was. They also have an internet site with a lot of interesting information.

In an antique store in Waynesville, OH, I found an old cabinet card photo of a couple and what looks like their 2 sons (in dresses) taken by a Clinton Indiana photographer. Under the photo it says:
Uncle Eli Brown
I don't see an Eli Brown in Vermillion Co IN that fits the photo, but in Nevins Twp in neighboring Vigo Co I see an Elijah Brown and his wife Anna (Ryan?) with their two sons Charles and Franklin. Perhaps the photo is of them.
By 1910, they are in Putnam Co Indiana with children, Charles, Frank, Ruth Irene, Harry and Anna. Elijah could be the son of C Hugh and Caroline Brown.
