For all of those who are interested and have time, Dugger, In. does have a
coal miners museum. Downtown Dugger, next to Post Office. Dugger also has
a coal miner's festival in the fall, parade, tours, etc.
Collections of photographs, maps of mines, mining equipment, union
information, newspaper clippings of accidents, bibliographies, lots and lots
of interesting stuff.
Dugger is approximately, 10 miles east of Sullivan, In. on St.Route 54. Or
25 miles south of Terre Haute (41 south to 54). Downtown Dugger is 2 blocks
south of the highway. Take second right after going under railroad trestle.
At 4 way stop you will see the post office, cata-corner on your right.
Hours are limited, if opened at all, manned I think by volunteers. But if
your there, I am sure some one can be found to let you in. Small towns are
wonderful that way. Go to the post office and ask.
South of town is the large drag line, used to be 2nd or 3rd largest in
world. Working west of highway to Pleasantville, about 3-5 miles. Go to
Woodward Cem. Turn and you can work your back for a view.
My father-in-law was a 50 year miner in Dugger. His stories of starting at
age 16, crawling on all fours 8-10 hrs per day, in a 2-3 foot tall space,
the whistles and their meanings, the rock falls, how to find your way around
a mine, were all very fascinating.
Fortunately, we had him put a lot of his memories on tapes for us and his
grand children.
Mike (1963 graduate of Union (Dugger) High School)

I believe there was considerable discussion about the coal mines last year. Why not look it up in the archives?

I too would like to know more about the coal mines. My great grandfather
Deverter Gill of Lodi, Indina and two of his sons Christopher and Joseph worked
in the mines also. One mine my father talked about was in Dugger, Indiana.

I have a brick from the Terre Haute Block company. It says "Terre Haute
Block" and has four oval spacers. The dimensions are slightly different
than masonry brick and it is about an inch thicker. It has been sitting
on the ground outside for the last 30 years at least. I don't know its
history but it certainly has held up better than the rest of my brick
collection. I traded for it with an elderly cousin back in the Terre Haute
area and he said it was from the defunct brick works that we drove past on
the way to Terre Haute. I remember interesting remnants of old buildings
and kilns there but you couldn't see much from the road. Coming from Terre
Haute it was on US 150 between West Terre Haute and Marion Heights. There
is a rail road underpass before Marion Heights and it is on the right just
before that underpass. I can't remember if there have been recent changes
in that area. I drove past there last summer and would have seen any
really noticeable change, I think.
I do not know when they went out of business but it would have been before
the 1950s.

For those who have information about a Coal Miner and would like to add to
the notebook, write me personally and tell me your story. Be sure to include
your email and regular address. I will place the article in the Notebook.
There were small mines all over the area when I was a child in the 1930's!
All signs of most of them are gone now and most old area maps don't show
their location.
My father, Harvey Orman, worked in a mine at Riley as a night engineer. I
think it was 1939 and he was working a 12 hour shift for a $1 a night. The mine
where he worked is on the north side of St Rd 46 east of the old canal and
now has a home built on the site. My grandfather Fred Smith, also worked in
that mine for many years. He spent most of his younger years in Coal mines
around Vigo County. He died of Lung Cancer in 1953.

My friend has a brick from a local Terre Haute firestation that was built in
1906. He thought it said Terre Haute Block on it, but could not find
anything so far about the company in the library's local history room. He
plans to go back another day and check old city directories. Has anyone
ever heard of the Terre Haute Block company?
