Thank you. Hmmm -- one George with three marriages, or two Georges, one with 2 marriages, or three Georges.
ON the 1850 census, George is 40 and Lucetta (sp on that census) is 15, awfully young, but George would have needed help. James is 15, Nancy is 10, Thomas 8, Margaret 6, and Alex 5. So the 1860 is consistent. As would be a second marriage. I suspect it is the third.
A family correspondent mentions another child, an older sister to Alex named Mary Catherine who came with Alex to Iowa. A possible scenario is that she was the daughter of Catherine Lussader, but old enough that she wasn't with the family in 1850. There may have been no children of the first marriage (e.g. a death in childbirth).
Alex himself thought that his mother was Margaret Morgan, but he could have been confused on the issue, so there is nothing to confirm that. Margaret Parcus is close enough for a child who hears it to get it wrong or remember it wrong. In any case, it is probably not his mother.
Lucetta, the widow, is the third wife. Interesting and more may come from this.
Thanks,
Wilson Brown

George Montgomery md Lucitta McAllister Oct 7, 1848; Vigo County Bk C-B, 176. Here they are with Alex in the 1860 census:
1860 Vigo County, Nevins Twp, M653-303, Pg 653, Ln 11, 1329/1285:
George Montgomery 56? Lawyer or Sawyer
Lucetta 27
Alexander 14
Sarah 9
Llu?gh? 6
Samuel 7/12 (All b. IN)
Assuming all of these ages are correct, George md Lucetta when Alexander was abt. 2 and Lucetta was only 15. The above marriage was taken from the WPA index; the Indiana State Library has the year as 1849. It also has the marriage between George and Catherine Lussader in Fountain County in 1835, but also a marriage between George Montgomery and Margaret Parcus on Jan 2, 1833; both in Fountain County.
Hope this helps,
Sharon
I finally got a chance to read these columns last evening. They were
wonderful and helps give an idea of what life in Vigo County was like "back
when." Thank you for providing the lead. ST

George Montgomery md Catherine Lusadder 24 Jan 1835 in Fountain County. In 1850 a George Montgomery is living in Vigo County. His youngest is Alex Montgomery age 5, and I know from other sources that he was very young when his mother died. He himself gave another name for his own mother, although the name Lussader has been suggested by other kin. But Alex was tiny when his mother died and left home for Iowa age 15. Her gave the name as Margaret Morgan.
Interestingly, there is a "female" age 18 by the name of Lucetta Montgomery in the house. Since the marriage was in 1835, she cannot be a daughter of George and Catherine, but I am also struck by the word play between Lucetta and Lusader and wonder what the connection may be here.
Do you have any idea who Catherine Lusader was and, as seems likely, she was the mother of Alex?
Alex married in Iowa an Iowa-born girl whose family came from Vigo county -- George Washington Brack and Nancy Ellen Hull.

I sent this yesterday, but it has not shown up on the list, so I don't know
what happened to it. So I'm now updating and resending it.
The following message came through on a library listserv I belong to
Thursday morning. Not good for genealogists who want to do work on
Saturdays. Please forward to other lists you may be on so that people will
be aware and not show up to do research and find the library closed.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Due to the impact of staffing restrictions and reductions, the Indiana
State Library will curtail evening and Saturday hours until staffing is
restored to an appropriate level. The security of patrons, staff, and
collections are a major concern. The curtailing of hours is effective
Saturday, March 1, 2003, changing our hours back to Monday through
Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.--

Hello, I seek info. on these two people who were supposedly born in Indiana, he in White Co about 1845 and her in Vigo Co. in about 1861. I have a copy of a marriage license where they were married in Tippecanoe Co. Ind. sealed on 05/20/1878. I believe his real name is Morgan Kee and he was raised in White, Benton and Tippecanoe Co. until he joined the army at Lewisburg,Ind. on 03/29/1862.I will elaborate if we can start a line of communication? There are some things that aren't adding up and I want to know who these people really were as they are my great great grandparents. Thanks in advance for your help!

If you are interested at all in the history of Terre Haute and Vigo County you are missing something if you are not reading the columns in the newspaper which is online. Every time I read a story although not about my immediate family I am filled with thoughts about the town in which I grew up and the people who where part of it. I am always hoping that others are reading also and thought maybe I should mention it for those who would be interested but are not aware of the columns.
The website for the paper is www.tribstar.com. The opening page has a lot of advertisements but the column listings on the left are black with white letters. Click on the third one down entitled Community. When the Community page opens go to the lower right and you will see a section entitled Valley Voices. Each of the columns listed under this is about an event, person, business, building or some detail of the past in the area . The columns change weekly but Tamie Dehler's and Mike McCormick's earlier editions are available under Genealogy/Historical Perspectives Earlier Editions. Try it. Hopefully you will find something helpful and/or of interest to you.
