Hi Pat, do you go by Pat? I don't have a direct answer to your question. Sorry! I do have a question for you. I was wondering if you have done any research on the Echert line? I found a Joseph Echert (b. germany) and his family in Floyd IN. Lafayette Twp. on the 1850 Census. One of their daughters name was Mary and she is listed at 11 years old. Could this be your Mary Martha? I have a Kadel line that I think may be related. My Kadel line is Johann Adam Kadel and Anna Margaretha Oehlenschlaeger (her parents names were Oehlenschlaeger and Echert both in Germany. Joseph may be their nephew. Do you know of any Kadel relationship. My Kadel lived in Terre Haute, IN. I'm trying to trace back my Kadels to Germany. They had distant relatives in the area when they migrated in the 1850's.

My grandmother's father was married to Mary Martha Auers - Eckert. According to family history he was a butcher and was murdered in Clinton, IN about the time of Ethel H. Potter's birth. I have found no records verifying this family unit or a death record or obituary for George Potter. Any ideas?
Thanks to everyone who answered my question, now the only thing left to do
is to find out if he was in the military and if so, where!!

Sue,
There is an entry in the WPA Marriage Index for William Herrington and it appears to be your William, but there is no spouse given and the age is off:
Herrington, William age: 30 marriage date: Nov 7 1900 father: Seth mother: Ellen Jewell Vigo Cnty Bk 6, Pg 3
I tried searching for anyone who married a Herrington on that date and didn't get anything.
These are transcribed records and certainly subject to error BUT the strange thing is, above this entry is one for Willard Herrington who married Bulah L Naugle Nov 7, 1900 Vigo Bk 16, Pg 30. Willard and Beulah are in the 1910 and 1920 censuses in Sullivan County. Willard is in the Vigo census in 1900 and is shown as single (not div or wid).
Please email me directly if I can help with anything else. rzgrdn(a)rapidnet.com
I found that soldiers who lived on Post were enumerated on the Post in the
County and State where they were located. I found a lost cousin of mine in
an army post in Texas in 1920.
When we were in the service 1950 thru 1971, we were enrolled at our quarters
on base or our home off base if that was where we living. My husband was in
Texas on TDY in 1970. He was enrolled there.
Mary
Jennifer,
I believe they were enumerated in the general population schedule for the
county and state in which they were located (stationed) at that time.

Hi everyone, I have a rather odd question. If an ancester was in the
military during a census enumeration how would you know? I am developing
this feeling that an ancester that I have been very actively searching for
for a few years was still in the military after the Mexican War when the
1850 census was enumerated. They didn't include military personell did
they? If not, then is there a roster of military personell that was done at
that time?

I checked the Vigo County Library obits, there is none listed for William Herrington. Perhaps his death did not make the paper?
I also checked the Indiana WPA Marriage Index. I did not find anything in Greene or Vigo Counties that looked like they could be a second marriage for William. He doesn't appear in the WPA Death Index, either.
HI Claudia,
Thank you for taking the time to contact me. Zimmerman is on my husband's
side of the family. Unfortunately, I have not researched this branch of the
family yet.
I do know that John's Zimmerman grandparents (Edwin Earl Zimmerman and
Dorothy Graves Zimmerman) lived in Rosedale, Indiana. I believe the Boland
and Bolin families are associated with the Zimmerman or Graves side of the
family. Donner is also a surname related to the Graves or Zimmerman family.
I wish I could be of further help,
Lynn Zimmerman

Hi everyone,
I just researched my files and found a Terre Haute Tribune Star article dated
March 16, 2002 (same day as the Kelly Center Dedication celebration I
attended). The article includes a photo of the exterior of the home, as well
as a photo of the interior.
I do not want to post the article here, as I am sure the paper owns the
copyright, and I do not want to get into trouble. However, here is a link to
find the article (includes an exterior photo of the the home at 444 South
Sixth St) at the newspaper's archives:

Click on Perform Search. The article title is: Chance to continue legacy
(dated March 16, 2002). Click on it. You can then view an exterior photo of
the home and read the whole article.
Here are my links to people mentioned in the article:
Kathy HOFFMAN- my paternal aunt and godmother
John (Francis) KELLY- my paternal great grandfather
Thomas and Pat KELLY- my paternal granduncle and his wife
Katie AIMONE- 1sts cousin, once removed
The article mentions the dumbwaiter turned into an elevator, the stained
glass windows in the home, the ornate woodwork, and some of the history
regarding the home.
If you are researching this KELLY family in Vigo County, please email me at

family information to share.
Thank you,

I would like to thank each one of you who read my post and took the time to
respond. So many people have expressed interest in the home, as well as
provided ways to locate information about the home. I was even contacted by
someone who attended school with my parents in Terre Haute :)
A special thank you goes out to Judy Dukes. She submitted my query to a Vigo
County historian, who provided a wealth of information about the home. It
appears that prominent families in Vigo County lived in the home. I emailed
the historian back, requesting his permission to share his email with the
list. I'll post it, if he allows me, as I think the information is very
valuable.
He let me know (only a few details of information he shared):
The home was previously a funeral home, before my ancestors purchased it in
1960. It may have been the Bedino Funeral Home.
It appears as though the home never served as a bank. A president of a bank
owned the home previously, which would explain the vault, which is still in
the home.
It also appears that the home was NOT a part of the Underground Railroad-it
was built too late.
Additional note from me: There is a Remembrance Garden planted on the right
side of the large home. Dogwood (for males) and magnolia (for women) trees
have been planted over the past year or so in memory of my KELLY ancestors
who have passed away, back to my great grandfather, John Francis KELLY. Each
tree planted has a white plaque with green shamrocks, listing the person's
name, as well as birth and death dates. I posted this in case someone else is
researching the KELLY surname. I have photos of all the trees and plaques.
All photos of this home (I have over 100 photos) were taken by me with my
digital camera on March 16, 2002.
So many people have expressed interest in the exterior and interior of the
home. I will put up a website asap of the home, as it is a wonderfully
preserved historic home in Terre Haute. I'll post details on the mailing list
once I get all the pictures and captions online.
Once again, thank you to all of you who expressed interest in the home and
contacted me.

Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana
Hi everyone,
I am looking for information about a historic home in Farrington Grove
district, Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. For many years, the home served
as a office for companies owned by my father's branch (surname: KELLY.
Associated surname: WALSH) of the family. The historic home was recently
donated to my paternal aunt, Kathy HOFFMAN, by the KELLY family, as office
space for C.H.A.N.C.E.S. for Indiana Youth.
While at the dedication earlier this year, I learned that the home (before my
KELLY ancestors purchased it) apparently served as a funeral home, as well as
a bank (the bank vault is still in the home), before my KELLY ancestors
purchased it. My aunt said that unfortunately, the abstract for the home was
lost a long time ago, but someone told Kathy the home *may* have been a part
of the Underground Railroad. My aunt (as well as me and other family members
involved in genealogy research) would like to learn more about this home's
history and the families that lived there, or used the property for business
purposes.
A picture of the front of the home may be viewed here:
http://www.cfiy.org/building.html
If you recognize this home or have any information about it or the families
that lived there, please email me. I have numerous pictures of the exterior
(including an arieal shot) and three stories of the interior rooms, which
feature: an old fashioned elevator behind a carved wood door, original
crystal chandeliers, beautiful stained glass windows, a stained glass
ceiling, photos of at least 12 of the beautiful fireplaces in the home which
feature hand carved wood, ceramic tile, as well as hand painted and copper
figurines, and the exquisite hand carved woodwork featured throughout the
home, and even the old gas fixtures on the third floor, where it is believed
the servants slept. If you recognize anything about the home, I would love to
send you photos of the home in return for information.
Thank you,
Lynn Zimmerman

I know that a roster of members does exist. Just a week or 2 ago, I
found a book on ebay that was (as I remember) a history of the
organization and it listed every known member. I wrote to the seller
who did a surname lookup for me, but I did not have anyone for me
listed, so I didn't buy the book. Keep looking, it's out there.
Perhaps the Vigo County Library has a copy.

Obituaries are many times a good source of information. Check the Vigo County Library web site. Here is the shortcut to the obituary section - http://165.138.44.12/. I saw a listing for Frances Ludy. You might be able to find one for Oscar. The actual obits are not posted, but you can order a copy for a small fee.
