Judy,
I know you addressed this to email to Barbara, but I wanted
to respond as I have a peripheral connection. YOUR John Wilson Staggs is indeed the 4th of 10 known children born to
Elijah Staggs and Nancy Thompson. I had him simply as
Wilson J. Staggs b. abt 1832 and married to California...I
show 4 kids born to them in 1862-1870. In 1850 John's family was at Vigo. 1860 and 1870 at Parker co.,TX. My ancestors' sister, Sarah Jane Turner was married to Jeremiah
Stagg, b. 1837..a brother of John. This should get you started:
Descendants of Elijah Staggs
1 [2] Elijah Staggs 1795 - 1871
. +Nancy Thompson 1807 - 1849
...... 2 James A. Staggs 1825 - 1900
.......... +Susannah Reece 1830 - 1909
...... 2 Franklin Staggs 1827 - 1898
.......... +Rachel Mary Reece 1832 - 1902
...... 2 Emaline Staggs 1829 - 1869
.......... +William R. Gardner
...... 2 John Wilson Staggs 1832 -
.......... +California Moore
...... 2 Thompson C. Staggs 1834 - 1871
...... 2 Jeremiah Staggs 1837 - 1913
.......... +Sarah Jane Turner 1842 - 1920
...... 2 Minerva Jane Staggs 1838 -
.......... +Martin V. Hopewell
...... 2 [1] Preston Staggs 1840 - 1921
.......... +Mary Octavia Boyles 1842 - 1904
...... *2nd Wife of [1] Preston Staggs:
.......... +Sarah Ellen Watson
...... 2 Benjamin D. Staggs 1843 -
...... 2 William Lee Staggs 1845 - 1906
*2nd Wife of [2] Elijah Staggs:
. +Perlina Fears 1812 -
...... 2 Davidson Staggs 1852 -
...... 2 Elijah Judson Staggs 1855 -
---Hope it helps!

My great-grandfather was John Wilson Staggs, born 7/3/1831 in Vigo Co, IN, married to California Ann Moore. Trying to find his parents - Do you know the names of Elijah Staggs' children? John Wilson had a brother named Preston. My grandfather (John Wilson's son) was named Elijah Edward Staggs and was born in Parker Co., TX. There are many Wilsons in the Elijah Staggs/Nancy Thompson line - Am I on the right track?
Thanks for any information you can provide.

Hi Sharon,
Thanks so much for giving me the direct link. I couldn't for the life of me
find it on the webpage. Also, can you be more specific as to the link at the
bottom of the page that you mentioned. Some days I feel really dense! Also,
while I'm addressing my dense moments, I understand that the library also has
a marriage and death database -- another one that eluded me.
Thanks for all your help. The Hasten/Hastings info you gave me was so great
-- it helped a couple other descendents who are siblings to my John and
Martha.
Have a great day.

Sharon - Oops - I posted your "thank you" note as a new message! I'm truly greatful for your help - I had no idea what township in Vigo I was looking for and it saved me hours of time searching the census online files for the entire county.
My Conover line also has Stewart and Waugh connections in Vigo County .
We also find the Waugh lines in upstate New York with other Conovers
relatives.
My grandfather's brother, Pearl Conover , married Grace Stewart about 1903.
He divorced her and married Kate McNalley by 1906. We are wondering if
Grace Stewart was a descendant of a spiritualist medium that was in TH in
the 1880's.
To the Waughs. A cousin in Wisconsin has a photo from her grandfather
Conover's effects ( Warren Mason Conover) , my grandfather's brother, with
the "Waugh Family" written on the back. Our family oral history is the
Waughs were neighbors on adjoining farms in the township and had helped the
Conover boys learn to farm in the early 1900's. I have not seen the photo.
My great grand , Ralph L. Conover, was raising trotter horses on this piece
of land. Could any of this fit with your lines?
Thanks.

they are relatives of the Waughs. There are still some living in Terre

the family except that both the Stewarts and Russells were relocated from
North Carolina. I am planning a trip to the IN State Library to do some
more digging.

The WPA (Indiana Works Projects Administration) compiled indexes of birth, marriage and deaths about 1942. They are available on CD from Heritage Quest. I know you can find them in book form at the Vigo County library. (for Vigo County, anyway).

Sharon,
I was hoping you could look on your Indiana marriage index to see if there
was a male Wiltfong who married a Clark. This marriage would have happened
between 1850 and 1860, if it happened at all. Wiltfong is a rare name, so
there should be few if any entries. The Clarks I had in mind were Elizabeth,
Martha and Zilphia. I looked at the library on a CD for 850 to 1900 Indiana
Marriages, FTM. Is that the same as you have? Also, I looked at the pre-1850
index online So, if that covers everything you have, please don't trouble
yourself. Thank you.
Diana
