Hi-
Looking for anyone related to Elmer Sickler, his father Andrew Sickler, or
his grandfather Lyman Sickler. They also lived in Edgar Co. IL and Clark

"Elmer Sickler, a retired railroader, died at his home, 310 First avenue....
He was 87 years old. Surviving are the widow Nettie, three sons: Randolph
and Bernard, both of Terre Haute and Vercoe of Caseyville Ill; three
daughters, Miss Yolanda Sickler of Caseyville, Mrs. Norma Black of W. Terre
Haute, and Mrs. Irene Cheek of Riley, seven great-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park."
Thanks,

I am descended from Cindora McClain Harris, of Merom. She was the sister of
Dr. Leslie McClain, well known in Terre Haute. We are related to a couple of
painters of that era named William, and Anna and a sister, seamstresses in
Terre Haute. There was another Will, brother of Cindora, who was in the
civil war with my gggrandfather. Any help sorting these guys out is
appreciated.

I checked my Directory and KADEL are found in the city of Terre Haute, but
none are living outside the city in Vigo County during 1887. Do you know the
first name of the sister who married a HOFFMAN? It is nice to find family
living so near each other. I looks like Adam KADEL's widow, Anna may be
living with a son. Hope something is helpful

Kathleen,
Thank you for the information on the churches and the city directory. On the 1880 Census I do find Anna living with her son Nick Kadel. I took the business directory sent to me and color coaded the names with matching address and was quite interested in the outcome, and now your Terra Haute directory confirms some of my thoughts..thank you. Also, Nicholas J. Kadel is "Nick". This helped me also. Thanks
Claudia

At some time the Wabash Vallet Gen. Society published a list of
Naturalization certifications and declarations of intention. I found these at
the Vigo Co. Library.
Where would I find the actual documents? THe Certifications referred to the
Circuit Court, for example:
Cert of Nat:
Name: Date Where Order Book # Page
Patrick KElly 5/44 Circuit Court, 6 278
James Kelly 5/14/39 " 5 338
John Kelly 3/60 " 12 256
John Willie Walsh 9/16/27 " 12/3 2495174
Declaration of Intention Vigo CO., IN:
Book 2 John Walsh 45
Does anyone know where these might be found in Vigo CO.? Would the Library or
the Courts have the records?
Thanks
Carolyn Kelly

Hi Claudia,
I am a descendant of the Stitt Family. Susan was a sister of my Gr
Grandfather.
I don't have uch on Kadel - but I do have a copy of the will of Hannah Stitt
- Susan's
mother ... I know it listed the Kadel's ... I will get it out of *storage* <g>
and see
what it says...
Talk to you a bit later today,

Sharon,
Wow, I was so jazzed to get this. You mentioned a Vigo BK 5 page 34 and an Index----but what book is this? Can I get a copy. I would greatly appreciate this. My cousin and I have searched for 20 years for something on paper to tie W. Michael to Adam and Ann M. Kadel. This is so great, so wonderful. I just hoppin with joy. You made my day.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Michael W. Kadel, 42, son of Adam and M (Ohlensleger) md Edith M. Gilbert May 23, 1898; Vigo Bk 5, pg 34. He's also shown in the index as W Michael and William M. If this information is correct, he was born abt 1856; and according to the 1900 census, he was born in New York.
And, as you said, he married Sue Stitt in 1873. According to the 1900 census, W. Michael Kadel was born in NY. Do you know that he and his parents came to Terre Haute prior to 1870?

Aquilla Phillips and his wife, Matilda Dudley Phillips are found in 1850 Vigo County, Otter Creek Census with the following
children: Edward, John, James, Wm., Emma, Barbara E., Frederick.
In 1880 Matilda Dudley is living close to her son, Edward Phillips and his family and with Matilda on census day is with
a Lila B. Creal, who is said to be her daughter.
I believe there are other children of Aquilla and Matilda, - a
Margaret, a Mary E. and a Clarinda Belinda Phillips who perhaps married a James Evans/James Hubert Evans./Hubert Evans. Edward Phillips married a "Mary E. Someone" per the 1880 census; John N. Phillips married Abigail Achsah Balding;James Nicholas Phillips m. Julia Emily/Emma Balding; Emma Phillips a Ransom B. Brotherton; Barbara Phillips is believed to have married a Mr. Allen.

The following link on the Rootsweb/Ancestry.com/Worldconnect site lists
two of them:
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:742422&id=I052
It also indicates that Adam was from Hesse-Darmstadt.
Perhaps the person who sent that in to the site knows more.

If you have not already done so, you might try: Probate records, ship's
manifests, marriage records for children (the Vigo Co. Library is
putting images of them on line at http://165.138.44.13/marriage/), death
records (sometimes list parent's names).
Good luck

I need help with my Kadel line, and hope someone can do this for me. My great grandfather was W. Michael Kadel he lived in Terra Haute and married Susan Stitt 26 Aug 1873 they had three children Anna Katherine (1873/74), Albert Kadel (1879) and Eva (Effie) Catherine Kadel (30 Dec 1875). Susan died in 1882. Early in the marriage. Then family talk has Michael married for a short time to Grandma Herschel (That's all I know) and then he married Edith Gilbert. They had one daughter Nettie Margaret "Ruth" Kadel (my grandmother). The family moved to California and Michael and Edith divorced and Michael moved back to Terra Haute and died 13 Apr 1934.
I can only take my family line back to Michael then the Kadel families get all mixed up in Terra Haute. There were several brothers that moved to Terra Haute from Germany. Also I believe some cousins. I just don't know who belongs to who.
My questions are:
Q. Anna M. (Oehlenschlaegar) and Adam Kadel had eight children, 4 boys and 4 girls, what were the names of these eight children?
Q. George John Kadel (9 yrs-12) came to Terra Haute in 1850-1852 with his sister who married a Hoffman, was his name Jacob Hoffman? They both got jobs at the Buntin Hotel when they arrived.
Q. In 1846 there was a United Lutheran and Reformed Congregation, in 1858 there was a separation and a new church was formed the German Evangelical Lutheran Congregation. I know in 1982 the German Lutheran Church was still around and had old records. Does anyone know the name of the church and if it is still in operation with an address? In the 1858 it was located on Swan and 4th Streets and had a parochial school.
Q. I've looked in 1860-70 Census for Kadels and could not find them. Because of death and birth records I know they were there. What records could I search to find family groups together for this time period? The 1890 Business directoy doesn't give me families, and the 1900 census give the next generation of families. I have the 1880 Census, it helped but I need families in the earlier census to put together their families.
Q. W. Michael Kadel Obit say that those who were living Pearl All and Effie Ladd. Who is Pearl All? and I was under the impression that Effie never married, did she?
This is a great start for questions maybe to many-I really need help-can you tell? Thank you so much for your time and effort.
Some other surnames linked to this family line-Stitt, Schrader, Coordes, Curd, Dorner, Rogers, Jones, Scharf, Miller Meneskie, Schriver, Shumek, Hampten, Pendergast, Landahl, Young, Koll, Fuhr.
Thanks
