Before purchasing WPA indexes, be sure the county you are most interested in
will be included. For instance, Indiana has 92 counties, but 25 of them were
never indexed by the WPA. I purchased my Vital Records index from Heritage
Quest (www.heritagequest.com) and they include in their description the
counties which will not be incuded. For those of you who were unaware of the
25 counties without WPA records, here they are:
Blackford Brown Crawford Dearborn Decatur Debois
Fayette
Grant Jefferson Jennings Lawrence Marshall Noble Ohio
Porter

Wabash Whitley
Pulaski County has no birth records, but does have marriage and death

The WPA Indexes were not done for all Indiana Counties! I wish they had
completed the whole state, and I for one, if I could afford them, would have
the whole set! Those books have allowed me to check several Indiana Counties
by going to one place, the Indiana State Library. You can also find copies
at the Vigo County Public Library and at Clay County Genealogical Society in
Center Point.

I am not sure how extensive the records are. When I lived in Indianapolis,
I went to the state library all the time and they had WPA records for many
states. Here in Terre Haute I think they have partial records for Vigo and
Sullivan Counties. I can't answer about Ohio. You posted to the Vigo Co IN
site--and that's where I am.
Your "to do" list will never be finished. In genealogy, every answer brings
up at least one more question.

I hope you aren't being sarcastic, because it truly is. It has many
mistakes and is done in a sloppy manner, but it is a compilation of some of
the best clues we can get for tracing our people.
They transcribed birth, marriage, and death records, generally between 1840
and 1920, by county.
They began a transcription of marriage supplements--records which included
the names of the parents--but the WPA was abolished before that was
completed.
I have found it invaluable in locating and identifying my Indiana ancestors
and relatives.

I found your post very interesting. Frederick and George Rapp led a group of people from Pensylvania about 1804 to Posey County. They set up the Rappite Community at New Harmony where they had a communal living style working at farming and manufacturing different merchandise. In his desire to enlarge the community, Frederick Rapp invested in a great deal of real estate along the western edge of Indiana. The group didn't stay long in Indiana and in the 1820's sold their propery to Robert Owens who came from Motherwell Scotland to continue the same type of life. I had not realized that he also invested in the area around Ft. Harrison! There is a pair of Books publlished by the Indiana Historical Society that tells all about them. The exact title of the book escapes me now, but I am sure you could find it at the State Historical Society.
One of the great advantages of living where your family did, was that they were able to sit on their own front porch and listen to the regular concerts that held at the park. Mary

Marge -
Glad I could help. I have the Indiana WPA birth, marriage, and death records on CD's I bought from Heritage Quest (see their web site at www.heritagequest.com). Many of the WPA marriage records do not contain birth dates (see the excellent explanation in the reply from Sharon Collins). I checked Fostoria and Albert's marriage record on my CD, it does not list birth dates. However, if you live close enough to visit the Vigo County library main branch, you might want to look up the certificate on microfilm (it is in book 17, page 231) to see if it has any additional information. If you don't live in the area, I would be happy to look it up for you.
If the people you are looking for died in Vigo County, another great source of information is obituaries. The Vigo County library has the local newspapers on microfilm and they also have an index (for most years, but not all) to help you find what you are looking for.
Good luck!!

I would be very interested in the will of Corey Barbour. In my records Corey has no living children or grandchildren at the time of his death. Only his third wife Lydia Shew from Jefferson Co NY is still living possibly. I do not have her death date. His mother, Elizabeth, is still living and brothers and sisters, Cromwell, Eliza, Mary, Daniel, Ormond and Sarah also living in 1879. What intrigues me is that I have "after 1879" as death dates for Mary, Ormond and Sarah and I am thinking that they were named in his will and some one researching these names has come across his will.
I am trying to find all the descendants of his father Daniel, who is my ancestor. I haven't done any land research on this family lately. Land holdings were extensive for Daniel in Fayette twp. Vigo Co also. Terre Haute is far away from me now. I have one of those Indiana land abstracts and they are quite fascinating. It is for a field in Fayette Twp but starts with the original purchaser of the whole section. As it gets broken down to a smaller size it gets tricky to follow the time sequence. It is a treasure trove of info for a cousin of mine ? only indirectly relates to me.
Does anyone else out there have connections to this Barbour family?

Not all WPA marriages records include birth dates. Some were compiled from the "Application for Marriage License"; these could show the birthdate; others, compiled from the Marriage License, or Record, would not have the birthdate. I checked my index for the Gwin/Shields marriage and it is not included in my index.
I also checked my birth index, but if either of these people are included, they were not named. Many, many births were recorded before the child was named.
The other ways to find the parents of this couple is through their death certificates, or maybe finding them living with their parents in the 1900 census which would show the month and year of birth.
Email me directly at rzgrdn(a)rapidnet.com and I may be able to help.

I checked my 1910 census for you; there were 19 Moy families living in Indiana (could be more but that's all that the index transcribed as Moy). Only 5 in Vigo county and none with families.
Jim Moy, 40, b. CA Md 15 yrs but no family with him
Living with Jim but listed as boarders and not family members:
Willie Moy, 38, Sing, b. China, Immigrated 1890
Charlie Moy, 38, Md 17 yrs but no family with him, also b. China but no immigration date
Then, separate listings,
Sing Moy 40, b. China, Single, Immigrated 1880
(He has someone living with him by the name of Joseph Gaino?; but no relationship given. Joseph also single)
Sing Moy 43, b. China, Single, Immigrated 1890
I have the images for Vigo County and the Index for the state. If I can help with anything else, please email me directly at rzgrdn(a)rapidnet.com

Lynn _ I just reread the posts you've sent here -- correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the Markles sold their holdings from 1829, after Abraham Markle Sr died insolvent. You've noted a sale in 1829 to John Campbell and another in 1831 from Frederick Rapp to Daniel Barbour. Was Rapp one of the other 1829 purchasers? And do you know any names of other purchasers?

Hi Lynn ~
Thanks so much for that update on the Collett Park area! It's been over 40 years since I was last there and I'd love to see a foto of my great-grandad Harry's house there, the one on N. 7th, if indeed it still stands! No rush -- anytime you're snapping pics will be fine:) Let me know your e-mail and I'll write an introductory note to show the current owner [my e-mail is conover(a)bigpond.com].
Hold on scanning anything from the property records for me, as I'm not quite sure what I could be looking for. As far as I know, my family's land was across from the Markle-Barbour land, so it's not likely to be mentioned in any records on your property.
However, I'd love to hear what you discover about the earliest history of that area, should you ever find out the tale! How did the Markles decide on that place to settle, and did they leave any description of what it was like in the old days? I've read on-line some great recollections of Terre Haute in the early 1800s, and the beauty of the area reallt seemed to inspire decriptive accounts!
My earliest memories of Harry's home and Collett Park date from the 1850s, when it was already much changed from what it was when my ggg-grandad settled there in 1840 -- and I found it hard to visualise it running clear over to the river!
Thanks again for sharing your information, Lynn:)

Hi Kath,
Re: Collet Park Locations-
I just skimmed though the abstract of my home, which was built in 1904. Here is something I found in the early part:
Slip 13
Office of Recorder, Vigo County, Indiana
Deed Record 10 Page 421
Frederick Rapp to Daniel Barbour
..
Dated, Mch 1" 1831
Recorded, June 17" 1845
Achknowledged Mch 4" 1831 before John Schreiber J.P. Beaver Co. Pa.
_______________
Information in my abstract shows that the Markles definitely owned the land before selling to the Barbour family (see earlier post, which starts my home abstract). However, I just skimmed the abstract for a minute, as it is very thick. I would be happy to look at it in depth, if you would like. I can also send scanned images of the pages freely to you, as I have a scanner.
Slip 15 in the abstract is the Will Record of Corey Barbour. There are numerous records in the abstract related to the Barbour family, including some maps. Also, alot of place areas, such as "All of the S.W. 1/4 of Sec. 10-12-9 containing 160 acres (from Frederick Rapp to Daniel Barbour Deed)."
I'll check in the abstract for other Barbour references-there are many, so it will probably be best if I scan all the images for you freely, rather than type everything out, as that will take me weeks! :)
I was amazed when I visited your website. Your ancestors' property at 2230 N. 7th street definitely faces Collett Park. The park is between N. 7 & 9th St. Your ancestors' property has considerable value facing the park. Collett Park is absolutely beautiful. It is the oldest park in Terre Haute. I live at 2205 North 11th, 2 blocks from the park. Your ancestors property is in the same block line as my home, only 4 blocks away!
Collett Park is still a desired area to live in here. If you would like, I would be happy to visit the park to take photos of it for you for free (I have a digital camera) , as well as your ancestors' home. It would be best to do so in spring, when the park and surrounding neighborhood looks beautiful with flowers blooming. However, if you do not want to wait, I would be happy to do so now. However, please send me an email to send to the owners of your ancestors' home, letting them know why you want a photo of the home. I do not feel comfortable taking a photo of someone's home without his/her permission. However, I am sure the current homeowner will get a kick out of seeing an older photo of the home and be willing to have the picture taken.
Take care,
Lynn
PS. Collett Park has been hit hard the past 3-4 years in the spring by downforce winds gusting 70 plus mph. Hundreds of trees were uprooted (In the past few years, we had a tree in front of our home fall and total a car, another year all wires in the rear of our home were ripped from the house, another year two trees on our block on opposite sides were uprooted and caused a gas leak) in Collett Park. Two years ago after a horrendous storm hit (initiallly called a tornado), numerous Collett Park trees 100 plus years old were uprooted all over the park-everywhere you looked were snapped or uprooted trees. My mom and I cried as we walked through it the following day, the damage was so severe. My mom felt she lost part of her childhood. My mom now lives in the home she grew up in a child. She later purchased the home she grew up in and our family grew up in my mother's childhood home.My mother, grandmother, uncle, and brother and I now live within a five block radius of each ot!
her, from the original family home-I live two blocks from Collett Park, and the neighborhood is highly desired for families. We would not change our home for the world. We greew up here and it is beautiful.

Hi - Hope you'll get this reply. I just found an old message board from you. You are looking for an Adam Heine in Vigo Co., IN. I am looking for an Adam Heine who was born in 1820 in Germany and somehow (I haven't found out how yet) got to Ft. Wayne (Allen Co.) Indiana where he was married to Hester Hight in March 1851. They later moved to Kansas where he died. My grandfather, also Adam, later moved to Oregon. Does any of this sound familiar? Would love to hear from you. Jean Evers.
