Where is Vigo County Library? (what town) - please excuse me, I am from
western Illinois, and if I remember correctly Terre Haute is probably the
largest city in Vigo county, right?

Dear list members,
We are interested in learning of the location of any manuscript
church records which may exist for Primitive Baptist churches in Indiana
(as well as other states). If any of you know of any, please let me
know. We are trying to preserve them, film them, extract names of
members from them, and then write histories of the churches and name the
surnames of the members, on our website, which will be a tool for family
history researchers as well as church history researchers. We have
several already, for Indiana, and are presently working on this project
for Missouri and Indiana, after having pretty much completed what we can
do for Illinois and Iowa with the records we have. Our website, if you
wish to see for yourself what we are doing, is:
http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html
(the ".html" at the end must be appended for it to work - the URL is
lengthy and tends to cut off part of the html, so it must be put back on,
before you click on it, to go to our site).
After you reach our homepage, there are links to click on for about 14
states, but only Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Indiana have much or some
completed at this time. We welcome you to write on one of our guestbooks.
Sincerely,
Robert Webb

I should have sent this to the list. That last from Marie makes the Webster
connection to WW firm. Also, the child Jabe is no doubt Jabez after his
grandfather.

Mary Ann it's me again. I do apologize, I guess I assumed you knew of the
connection to the Casto Family
Lizzie (I assume this is Elizabeth Sterling) Born 1857 married Webster W.
Casto, (Webb) in C 1870 and they had 12 children:
Alice C 1872
Dave C 1874
Jabe C 1876
James
John
Judith
Margaret
Mercy (I believe this to be the Mercy you mentioned in connection to your
family)
Will
Mary
Fred
Ruth
Also the Sterling's and the Civil War is as follows:
William Alexander served in the 149th Erg Co.. F.
Milton Served in the 8th Indiana (Died 06/18/1863 buried in Bethesda
Cementery, Vigo Co. Ind.)
John Tenbrook Sterling served in the 11th Indiana and won the Congressional
Medal of Honor.
Ruben Nathaniel Sterling also served in the 11th Indiana. He went by the
name of either Nathan, Nat, or Nathaniel. I have also found him listed as
Ruben Nat Sterling
Just figured out who the Jane Sterling in the 1860 census is. Age 17 born RI,
this is William Alexander's wife Ann Jane Wood, born in Rhode Island in 1844.
The 1850 census shows a Mary Sterling born 1849. Have no idea who this is, I
have no further information on her, Do you? But I notice the 1870 census
shows a Mary Sterling. I found Lizzie listed in the death notices as the wife
of Webb Casto. Don't
have a clue as to who is who. the Mary listed in 1870 census could be the
Mary in 1850 census. The Ancestory, com shows Webb Casto's wife as Lizzie as
does the Latter Day Saints. I haven't a clue. Any ideas? Marie
Mary Ann, Hi. I am home again but for how long who knows. My mother in law
took a whole weeks medicine in one day and had to be rushed back to the
hospital and have her stomach pumped. Now we have her in an Assisted living
home, the only problem is she is 3 hours away from us and now of course
excepts us to be their every day. Oh well, we will get through this also.
Haven't have time to get the stuff together to send you yet but I can give
you some information on David Marion Sterling, and according to the records
passed down in the family that is his correct name. He was born 07/13/1852,
Sugar Creek Township and died on 11/27/1861.
An old man named Homer Sterling, (said he was not related but he knew of the
Sterling's) who has since passed told me there was a bunch of Sterling buried
in the New Hope Cemetery, and he stated there was a lot of babies and young
children.
I have never been able to get to this Cemetery - perhaps when you get back to
Indiana you could add this one to your list. David Ambrose is supposed to be
buried there also. I will also mention that when I looked at the microfiche
of the 1850 census, David's name could have very easily been read as Daniel
H. His marriage license is shown as Daniel A. but the Family bible
supposedly in the Casto Family somewhere shows his name as David Ambrose
Sterling. Who know. We surely will find the answer someday. Be in touch,
Marie
Hi, list,
I'm new to this list. I've been doing research and collecting records
on Primitive Baptist churches, mainly in the midwest, for about 30 years,
and now have a library, and a rather extensive website with history and
surnames of alot of members. Am really just beginning to do much for
Indiana, as we've concentrated on Illinois and Iowa, the past few years.
We do have some records of perhaps a dozen Indiana churches, and a lot
(hundreds) of Indiana association minutes. We also have several bound
volumes of periodicals covering many years, with obituaries in them of
members, dating back into the 1800's. If anyone knows of the location or
existence of any records or minutes, we would appreciate your help.
If you wish to view our website the URL is:
http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html
(make sure the full .html is appended at the end)
Thank you kindly,
Robert Webb

Hi Dick,
I was just thinking of joining the Casto list if there is one. I just found
the connection from the Sterlings to W.W. Casto. I have two pictures of the
Casto men. I will send them to you in a couple of days. I don't know much
about the family yet. I have all sorts of loose ends about but nothing tied
together as yet.
Can you give me any more information?
Mary Ann
Sharon and Mary Ann,
We connect to Casto through my great great uncle Richard John Harris, who
married Alice Maria Casto about 1868 (he would have been 20 - that's a
guess on the date.)
He was born 24 July 1848, she 8 May 1849. They had a daughter Martha b 28
Mar 1877. Any relatives among you?

Hi,
Does anyone have access to an 1870 Census index for Vigo Co? If so,
could I impose for help? I'm trying to find George W. Harmon, aged abt
49, wife Martha, aged abt 45 - possibly with 3 daughters living in the
household, Violet, Maria, and Harriett/Hattie.
Any help locating this family would be appreciated.
Thanks,
G. Swoik

Hi Mary Ann,
Here, I believe, is the family you are looking for in 1860:
National Archive Series M653, Microfilm No. 303, Pg 272, Ln 16A, Vigo County,
Sugar Creek Twp, Terre Haute P.O.
Stirling, Mary 45 Seamstress Hd $500/90 NY
William 26 IN
Milton 21 IL
John 19 IL
Catherine 17 IL
Jane 17 RI
Elizabeth 11 IN
Marion 8 IN
Ruben 15 IL
1870, Sugar Creek, M593-366, Pg 360A, July 13, 1870, Pg 360A, Ln 11, 171/171
Casle?? W W 34 Farmer IN
Mary 21 Keeps house IN
Margaret 1 IN
Sterling, Mary 54 House keeper NY
John 27 Farm laborer IL
Reuben 23 Farm laborer IL
Peters, Abram 23 Farm laborer IN
Shepherd, Aldrian 18 Farm laborer IN
Gray, Frank 17 Farm Laborer IN
Popp ??, Jacob 13 Works farm IN
Evans, Mary 20 Domestic servant OH
I'm not real sure of the spelling of the names with the question marks; those
are my best guess. Could Elizabeth, in the 1860 census have been Elizabeth
Jane? and maybe Mary is living with her and her husband in the 1870 census?
The age would be right.
Hope this helps, I saw your posting to Amy and had my census material out so
thought I would just go ahead and do the lookup for you.
Sharon Collins
Amy,
Would you be so kind as to look for a Michael Haag (Hagg) and his family. I
show them in the 1860 census as Michael Hagg and July( Juliana ). I have a
1870 Indiana census for 1870 but no Michael. I know he was still on the same
place he bought in 1853 as I have a deed where he is selling it in 1881. The
sale is contingent upon he and his new wife, Mary Magdalene being able to
live there till their death.Mary still lived there in 1903.
Thanks,
Steve Haag

Might you be able to look up John and Mary Jane Myles (Miles) in Terre
Haute, 1900. I think he was a laborer. May not have been literate? One
daughter was Louisa Lily Miles, ang about 19.

Amy, do you have a listing for Daniel Warren in 1870? I can't seem to
find a census where his wife was listed. She left him before 1880 (which
I have) with two children, Sarah and Mary. Thanks very much if you do in
advance. Peggy
does anyone one have access to the 1860 Vigo co census that could do a look

Thank you very much for your help

Hi:
I am a first timer to your list and need some help, of course.
I am searching for ANY information on Peter Petershack (Paterchak), DOB Oct. 17, 1907 in Terre Haute....
Parents were Louis Petercsak and Anna Chercko...........
Also for Michael Joe Patercsak DOB Sept. 29, 1910 in Terre Haute....
Parents were Michael Patercsak and Elizibeth Koretz......
Peter was a brother to my father-in-law and I just recently obtained a SS-5 application for Michael Joe and found that they were born in the same place.......There certainly seems to be a common surname, even if the spelling is a little different.......
Thanks in advance for any help you folks out there might be able to offer. Even if there is someone with a like or similar surname still living in that area.....
