Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The ninth grades have moved up to the high schools now... They moved the 6th
grades out of the elementary's and into the middle schools. They annexed
quite a bit of property to build this new school but it is very nice and
compliments the neighborhood rather than take away from it.

I don't think they did use any of the old brick except for the
entrance. I
am not sure because I was only there for part of the year while it
was being
built. My mother attended school there in the 1920's and I went
there for 3
years in the 1940's. It was a rectangular building with 8 rooms on
each of 3
floors. They really needed a larger school there for it served the
South part
of the city for a middle school. (7, 8, 9) I don't know if they
still have
the 9th grade there.

Hello fellow Vigo Co researchers-
This is a request that personal conversations be sent only to the person to
whom they are directed. When there is no research or genealogy or
historical content, in my opinion, it is a discourtesy to broadcast it to all
of us who are not affected or interested. It's junk mail to 99% of the
people on the list. Perhaps some folks have nothing better to do than open
emails with the content equivalent of "Thanks, Joe," but for many of us it is
just clutter in our busy lives.
Yes, it only takes a second for me to hit delete, but how many other people
also have to hit delete? And how many of these inappropriate messages are
there each day? Quite a few. The problem is aggravated when the subject line
looks like there might be content, but there is none. I subscribe to
several lists, and Vigo Co. seems to have this problem far more than other
lists.
The solution is to not hit "reply" with unchanged subject lines, which sends
the note to the whole list. Rather, insert the actual address of the person
whom you are addressing.
So my request is to be courteous and think of the strangers you are
impacting. Thank you for realizing the consequences and acting on them.
Sincerely,
Charlotte Redden

That is interesting the new school was built to look like the old one. We
sometimes have that happen here after the tornados come through. When my
sister purchased a fairly new home in Bloomington 3 years ago, she found the
brick was from Spencer School. Our gg-grandmother had attended this
building. Did the contractors reuse the brick this time? Most of the
Conover men were bricklayers. Marie

Hi,
I will take you up on the offer of obits. My sister, Kathryn , and I will
work on a reasonable list.
My ggg-aunt, Catherine (Kate) Conover , married John Daniels in 1876.
They were married about 8 years before she died. This was in Terre Haute.
I will see if Kathryn can give me more details for you. She was living in
Bloomington until last fall. I have hoped we might find someone from this
family . We need the place in NJ where Catherine and William Conover were
married as well as parents names to move further back. Too, too many
William Conovers from this age bracket and we have no name for his father.
On William's death certificate is listed the birth place for William's dad
as Washington County , Pennsylvania. I have searched at the archives and
library there as well as gone through many records with no luck. If
William's dad was married more than once, it is difficult to figure his age.
The name given for the mother was Anna J. Keer. Many people over the last
few years as well as the Van Kovenhoven / Conover Association have helped.
No Bibles or documents were passed to my Mother. Her father , Ray
Conover ,died when she was a teen and we live over in Ohio.

In case anyone is interested, ancestry.com has the 1890 and 1892 Terre
Haute city directories available for a free seach until Oct. 6th. I've
done several searches and the directories cover surrounding areas
also.
Good luck Kathleen Dewey
Some one mentioned that the husband of Terre Haute's teacher, Marie
Conover's may have been Harry Conover. Here are the Social Security
Death Index listings for the two Harry Conovers whose last residences
were in Indiana:
HARRY CONOVER, born 29 Aug 1909; died Sep 1983; last residence, 47802
(Terre Haute, Vigo County, IN); SS#, 307-05-1942, issued in Indiana.
HARRY CONOVER, born 20 May 1902; died Sep 1968; last residence, 46750
(Huntington, Huntington County, IN); SS#, 310-14-2141 issued in
Indiana.
If Marie Conover's husband was Harry Conover, the above HARRY Conover
is probably the one. Consequently, it would appear that neither of
the two Marie Conovers named below are from Terre Haute. I don't know
the restrictions/legalities in Indiana, but Ohio teachers, up until
about 1999, were not within the Social Security program; if it is the
same in Indiana, then Marie Conover would not be listed in the Social
Security Death Index.
If some of you researches have NOT used the social security death
index to search for birth and death records, etc. for individuals who
have died in the last 30-40 years, I would urge you to do so. The
records on Rootsweb, (http://www.rootsweb.com) even have a letter
already formatted that you can send to the Social Security
Administration, asking for a photocopy of the registration information
for the specific individual, which often list the names of the
parents. I sent in two requests about the same date and received back
(within three weeks) a photocopy that "supported" our hypothesis that
a specific deceased individual was the son of a distant relative. The
photocopy for the second one has not arrived even after about five
weeks. BUT finding the information has been very valuable.

The zip code 47802 is the south side of Terre Haute, which would also make
Mr. Harry Conover a resident of the same area where Sarah Scott Junior High
School is located. It has recently been torn down and rebuilt keeping the
same name and the facade of the old school.
Hi.
I am looking for information on Samuel O. Burris, listed in Terre Haute in
1892. This may be an ancestor of a women names Burris who had a baby in
Terre Haute in 1922 and gave it up for adoption.

If you are looking for recent obits you can go online with the Tribune Star
and get them back to I think the early 90's... www.tribstar.com and then go
to the bottom of the screen for the Library feature. After football season
is over at the end of October (GO Hoosiers!), I can start going to the
library again... If you would like to send me your list, I can look them up
while I am doing mine. It looks like they might cross over... How did you
get a Conover out of the Daniels on my list? That was too coincidental.
Just send me your list and I will work on it starting in November.... If you
would like. The copies are only 10 cents per and we can work out those
details later.

Dear Cathi,
You must be related in some way as there are several Catherine/ Kathryn
in every generation.
I am not sure where Arch and Harry fit in. We are researching 6 men.
My ggg- grandfather William Conover, his brother( we think as they are
buried together) Ralph R. Conover , Garret Conover that was over in Owen
Co.( but several of his kids are buried with ours in TH), Samuel, Alfred, &
Aaron . The last 3 we have no clue as to where they fit the picture except
like William and Ralph were from New Jersey. All were in either Vigo or
Owen coming to Indiana from 1838/1840 to 1856.
1. I would like to make contact with the gg-grandchildren of William's
son Marcus. He married Martha Gunn in 1866 in TH. He is buried in TH but
there is no trace of the family.
2. We also need to know where Ralph R. died . He is buried in TH, but the
death record is not available even though the city had records for others
that had died earlier. They think he died out of the county.
3. I am also trying to find where in Florida my great uncle, Pearl Brae
Conover died in 1952. He is buried in TH but there was no obit and he was
in FL when he died. His first wife was Grace F. Stewart and the second was
Katherine McNalley. Their daughter was Kathryn Brae Conover Everett. She
lived her married life in Indianapolis. Pearl was a decetive on the TH
police force.
4. I also need to find which church the original bunch attended or any of
them in the following generations. This might help to place where in New
Jersey they were living before TH and obtain marrage records for Ralph R.
and his wife Elnor Snedeker and William and Catherine Warth. We do not
know the names of anyone's parents except Elnor and Garret Conover and
since we do not know the relationship we are at a standstill. When I have
traced Garret back , the siblings do not fit the correct time frame. I am
assuming he was an uncle or a cousin.
Like all the other Dutch families we have repeatedly used the same names
in sibling families for the next generation. We must be slow learners.
This makes sorting out the families very difficult without a paper trail.
This is quite a list of wishes. I appreciate any tidbits you can pass
along.
