Sanford is on the Illinois border in Fayette Twp., about 5 miles south
of the Vigo Co. - Vermillion Co. border. (Also, it is easy to get
confused between Vermillion Co., IN and Vermilion Co., IL.)

I am curious. Is Sandford in Vigo County close enough to Vermillion
County that some of the residents might have gotten married in
Vermillion County?
Hartwell married Amelia (Milla) Longdon August 4, 1833 in Vigo. They
are listed in the 1850 census as Jordon. I find a number of Jordons
getting married in Vermillion around this time and I am wondering if
they might be relatives.
Also, was the custom generally at that time to get married in the
bride's community?
A couple of Hartwell's sons, well actually, the only surviving ones,
married in Paris, IL in the 1860s. One Robert as a Jordan and the other
James Madison as Jordon.
We are still trying to find out what became of Amelia after Hartwell
died in 1873.
Thank you for your time and attention.

Sandford is very close to Vermillion County, and straddles the Illinois line.
By the way, for anyone who has roots in Sandford, there is an interesting
little book called The Turning Point, written by Bill Denham, that is a
history of Sandford. It does not purport to be a genealogical reference, but
when my mother lent me her copy (she has Sandford roots in Shuman, Edington,
Fuqua, Cox - Rosehill Cemetery looks like a family reunion) I found it
extremely useful in making a critical connection that ultimately helped in
locating literally dozens and dozens of ancestors going back as much as 14
generations. If anybody wants me to look for their Sandford relatives in the
book let me know. Unfortunately, the book did not mention anyone with the
last names you have listed, so I have nothing helpful for you. Sorry

I know that I have found my grandfathers family on the census of
1880 and 1900 in Clay Co. IN. They came over to the U.S. from Wales and
settled in Pennsylvania and then Harmony. The father and boys all
worked in the mines, until the depression of the 30's, at one time the
boys went together and bought some land and mined it until it played
out. My great grandfather died sometime after 1900, his name was Robert
Steele (b. october 1842) My great grandmother was Jane Carpenter Steele
and sometimes Sarah Jane (b. May 1845). There children were: William
b.3-28-1871, John 9-24-1872, Joseph 3-12-1874, Elizabeth 3-1875, James
2-21-1878, Thomas 1-11-1880, George 1-15-1882, Sarah Martha 1-27-1884,
Herman 4-25-1886, Robert 2-24-1888, Frank and Archie ( Archie died
sometime after birth, I think) 11-17-1892. There was an aunt Anna
Steele b. 5-20-1869.
William, John, Joseph, and Elizabeth were born in Pennsylvania the
rest were born in Indiana. Sarah Martha is the only one I have been
able to locate in the birth records in Clay Co. I have always been told
that Robert and his wife Jane were buried in Harmony. I know that
Robert Jr. is buried in Anderson, IN and Frank should be buried in Clay
Co. Frank lived in Bowling Green as long as I can remember. Sarah
Martha married some one with the last name of Bell and lived in the Clay
Co. and Vigo Co. area. William may have gone back to PA to mine coal.
I can't not believe how much I put down here, this is the first
time I have put this all together in one place.
Thank you for reading this, Karen
Well, it has been a couple of months, let's try this again...
I am trying to find the parents of Hartwell JORDON b. April 15, 1809 in
Grayson Co. VA d.5/2/1873 near Sandford, Vigo Co., IN and the parents of
his wife Amelia (Fermilia?, Milla) LONGDON b. about 1807-08 in KY,
m.8/1/1833 probably in KY. I believe I have found reference to Hartwell
(Jourdan) as a private in the Illinois militia during the Blackhawk
War. Another descendent has a newspaper report that says he was a
captain. I believe he may have been at the battle of Fallen Timbers,
but this is a memory from a discussion I remember between my mother and
a cousin who was doing research.
They had 8 children (depending on the source): Mary b.1835, Robert E. b.
8/21/1836, Sarah b.1841, Jackson b. 1843, Margaret b.4/28/1846, James
Madison b.4/28/1846, Henry and Joseph. Robert E. served in the Civil
War. Henry and Joseph died in the war, apparently without off-spring.
They may also not have existed, the only record I have on them is a
mention in an aunt's autobiography.
Robert E. met Margaret Ellen Minor (Miner?) b. 3/8/1846 during the war
and married her 11/29/1866 in Paris, IL. Robert E. appears to have
changed the family name to JORDAN. They had 10 children; George W.
b.1869, Benjamin Minor b.11/19/1875, William Emmett b.3/5/1878, Dennis
Alva b.1879, Charles, Franklin, Jacob, Robert, Minnie and Alonzo. It is
my understanding that only the first 4 survived to adulthood. William
Emmett served in the Spanish American War and died in the influenza
outbreak of 1918.
Family legend says the JORDANs (JORDONs) came from Ireland. Do any of
you JORDAN researchers out there know if there is significance to the
spelling of the name? I don't know if Hartwell's spelling was his
spelling or just the way the census taker and/or paymaster (? militia
record keeper) thought it should be spelled.
For someone knowledgeable in Indiana history, I have another puzzle.
There is a record of a Hartwell JORDAN purchasing land in Warren Co.,
IN, I believe in the 1830s. Was Warren Co., part of Vigo county during
this period?
Thank you for your time and attention.

Kathleen,
Honey Creek runs from the east and empties into
the Wabash River. It is just south of Terre Haute.
Honey Creek Township through which it flows
carries its name. In the early days there were
lots of wild bees there.
I don't think the area is treacherous.

I don't know Honey Creek personally. Vigo County has townships named Otter
Creek, Lost Creek, Sugar Creek, Prairie Creek, and Honey Creek. Honey
Creek goes through the center of Honey Creek Township, which is directly
below Harrison Twp , which is Terre Haute. However Honey Creek traverses
Prairieton Township and hits the Wabash River right where the state line
starts to follow the river. I imagine this is the "mouth of the
creek". Any of the numerous creeks become dangerous with swift currents
after heavy rainfall, usually in the spring. I had a friend in high school
who drowned in Coal Creek because it was shallow with deep pockets in the
area where she was wading. My first cousin was swept under a downed tree
in the Wabash and drowned when he was 10 years old.
Honey Creek is south of Terre Haute, and the mouth would be where it meets
the Wabash River. Currents are odd in places like that, so could easily
have been a treacherous place to swim. Both the creek and river are
generally running high in May, depending, of course, on rainfall. You might
be able to find out if that May was particularly wet, and make assumptions
based on that. I have swum in Honey Creek, but not at the mouth, so have no
personal experience.

Dear Vigo Co., Listers:
I just received a packet of information that I had requested from Highland
Lawn and Woodlawn Cemeteries. I noticed that the return address was stamped
on the envelope with address 4520 Wabash Ave. The 5 was written over in ink
with a "4". So, from this I am assuming that the preferred address is 4420
Wabash Ave. in Terre Haute, IN 47803. **Note of praise for the help at
Highland Lawn/Woodlawn Cemeteries. I mailed a request sometime after January
30, 2000. I received a response today. :)
I also requested address and phone # for Calvary Cemetery and Durham
Cemeteries. This is the information that was sent to me. (IF ANYONE HAS
ACCESS TO THESE RECORDS WITHOUT WRITING TO THE CEMETERIES, PLEASE LET ME
KNOW. I HAVE JUST A FEW NAMES TO CHECK.)
Calvary Cemetery Durham Cemetery
4227 Wabash Ave. Lyman Durham
Terre Haute, IN 47803 8000 N. Clinton Road
812-232-8404 Terre Haute, IN 47805
812-466-2714
When requesting information from the Highland Lawn Cemetery I enclosed a SASE
as well as a few dollars for cost of copies. In the letter that was returned
with my information I was told that all contributions for genealogy research
goes to the Bell Tower fund. They are in the process of raising funds to
restore the Bell Tower at the entrance to the cemetery. :)

I don't know if the paper exists but you can still get obits etc. out of
this paper by going to back to the Vigo Library web site. Where you found
the obit should have a link to e-mail the library for the obit you want.
just let them know the page year and name.
