Trying to locate a family member of Verlin Nees of Riley area. Found a very
nice picture of him behind a picture of my grandfather. Picture circa early
1940's.

Tracey,
Have you tried the web site for the Vigo County Public Library? I don't have
the address in front of me now but let me know if you need it and I will
look it up for you. They have a death index on their web site that begins
abt. 1906 (I think) and goes to abt 1960's (I think). Anyway this could be
very helpful to you.
Good luck!

Looking for information on two households of Larkins listed in the 1860 Vigo Co., IN census.
One household is for James Larkins, b. 1830 in NY with wife Lavina and children Albert and Amanda.
Second household is for Sandford Larkins, b. 1799 RI with wife Elinor and son John. The household also includes a Susan Madox (Mattox?) age 18. David Larkins, age 35, b. NY and a male Frances Larkins, age 7, b. IN are in the same household.
The ages of James, 30, and David 35, both born in NY makes me think they are related. Exactly how the elder Sandford fits in the picture is unknown.
All information welcome.
Hello:
If anyone has easy access to any census in Vigo between 1880-1910, could you
please check on a Margaret E. ALSMAN or ALLSMAN for me please? I've lost her
after 1870 in Pope Co., IL, but she appears to have died in Vigo Co. in
either 1908 or 1913 (depending on which index you look at). Thank you for
your time!

I checked with the Genealogy Staff while at Ft. Wayne and this is the
information they had: STATE CENSUS RECORDS, by Ann S. Lainhart,
Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. (pp.40-4l)...The Census of Indiana
Territory for l807 was published by the Indiana Historical Society
(l980). It is a facsimile of the original manuscripts of Knox, Dearborn,
and Randolph counties. The original for Clark County has not been found
and in its place the Society used an l807 voters list. They also added
a poll list of Kaskaskia (Randolph County).
The Indiana Constitution of l85l stipulated that an enumeration be made
every six years of all the white male inhabitants over the age of
twenty-one years. This requirement was first carried out in l853 with
each township assessor collecting the names of white male inhabitants
and filing the list with the county auditor. In l865 the procedure was
modified to include the age of each white male and in l877 the law was
amended to include a separate list of negro males over the age of
twenty-one years. The revised edition of Ancestry's Red Book, after
citing the l807 territorial census, says "No other state census exist,
although state enumerations of males (without names) above age
twenty-one were taken at various intervals beginning in l820". This may
be true for some counties, but the l853 census for Hendricks and
Jennings counties, available at the FHL, clearly lists the names of
every white male over twenty-one.
These state censuses are not complete for every county and except for
Hendricks and Jennings counties in l853, they are not available at the
FHL. Some original censuses are located at:
Indiana State Library
l40 North Senate Avenue
Indianapolis, Indiana 46204
The State Library has the following censuses:
l857 - Hartford City, Blackford County
l87l - Scattered townships, Blackford County
l877 - Scattered townships, Blackford County, 5 townships of Fayette
County
l883 - Scattered townships, Blackford County
l889 - Scattered townships, Blackford County
l90l - Jackson township, Washington County
l9l3 - Henry County
l9l9 - Jackson township, Ripley County
l93l - Henry County
A series was produced in l940 by the Indiana Historical Records Survey
called the INVENTORY OF THE COUNTY ARCHIVES OF INDIANA. Each county was
given a volume, though not all counties were completed. This is
probably the best source for determining which state censuses still
exist for your county of interest.
I'm not sure if this is what you were looking for, but hope it helps. My
father passed away in California and I've been heart broken and
preoccupied - so have taken longer than I intended to post this.

Dear William,
Thanks for your response. My James Monroe Watson was born Oct. 23, 1860
and died in 1941 in Hillsdale, Vermillion Co. IN. It does not appear to
be the same man. However I do wonder if there is a family connection I
have names of siblings and aunts and uncles I you think is worth it to
compare any further.
Best wishes,

Hi Cathy,
I appreciated your effort. My Watson family has been the hardest of all
my surnames to figure. Perhaps my James Watson b. 1816 was from VA or KY
moved to IN and then to Ohio and back to IN again. Family orals history
remembers James as a man involved in flatboating.
I have the names of his siblings and know his wife was a Lucy Good of
Indiana.
Best wishes, Vicki

Hi, I'm Karen and I don't know if I have some Watson's that you may be
interested in. Two of my great aunts married Watson's, aunt Frona Shouse married
Noble Watson in about 1917. Aunt Lula married Reese Watson. I think they both
married in Terre Haute. Frona and Noble had no children living and Reese and Lula, I
believe have 6 or seven children still living.
