Yes, that obit is acceptable. As long as there is some connection with Vigo

I don't know if the VCPL has these, but I do know they are incredibly
helpful and do short research in their special collections (for FREE
with SASE). If they don't have a resource, they tell you where you
might find it. Check out their genealogy page at:

Your affidavit seems to be in the right time period for the "Drake
Estate" scam (my relatives fell for it too) where a very large sum of
money held in trust was "supposed" to be divided among the descendants
of Sir Francis Drake if one could prove lineage.

Dear Rhonda,
I don't live in Vigo County, but if you check the USGenWeb for that
county, I think they have a web page. I just recently ordered some
obituaries from the library and they were extremely quick with their
response and helpful. I know they have an email address--which I did
not keep. They might be able to tell you if what you want is available,
before you go any further.

If your grandfather used these to prove that he was a legal heir then these
would be in the probate records. If the estate to which he was a probable
heir was also in Vigo county you can look there. Each probate order book
has an index and each probate file is also indexed. There are also minute
books which contain the actual clerk notes but usually these are really
hard to locate. Check first under your grandfather's name. Look for any
other individuals with the same surname. Especially open files (not closed
probate files).
Hope this helps.

Subject: [INVIGO] Information Request, PLease help!
Hello Vigo County Researchers,
Sorry about such a generic subject title.
I am hoping to find out what happens to Affidavits & Power of Attorneys and
notary publics records in Vigo County, IN.
I'll try to briefly explain:
My grandfather in 1932 had an affidavit drawn up & signed by him that
stated
he was the son of.......that his father was the son of...... This goes back
about 8 generations listing father & mother's name each generation! Along
with these papers was a Power of Attorney naming a Thomas A. E. Cantwell
as
grandfather's true and lawful attorney. (I'm not sure if this man was
actually an attorney or just a notary public, but the power of attorney
reads like an actual attorney was involved:...the above named will pay me
25% of the net value.....this power of attorney to be valid and irrevocable
for such length of time, as the nature of the case may require.......)
Among these papers also states that grandfather has provided his genealogy
as true as he is able to determine from family bible, public library
records, cemetery records & inscriptions on tombstones and bureau of public
records which are attached here to.
Isn't that GREAT! I'm sure everyone is thinking. Yes, it is but please read
on.
As best as we can determine (guess) grandfather must have been contacted in
some way and told that he might be entitled to an inheritance of one of his
ancestors estates. As there is no-way he would have known these ancestors
so
far back. Not to mention his own father & mother (as best as we can tell so
far) died when he was about 7-9 years old and was taken in by a
non-relative, this was in IL. This family has been very hard to research
because grandfather's descendants know so very little about grandfather's
family.
The copies I have of the Affidavit & Power of Attorney are copies of a copy
and the original must have been in bad shape. No one in the family has any
original or copies of that information grandfather provided as proof of his
genealogy.
I'm sorry this took so long.... My questions:
In Vigo County, IN would these kind of papers/documents/records be held
somewhere?
Would the Affidavit, Power of Attorney, and those attached proof of
genealogy (which of course is what I'd most like to get a look at!) be
recorded/filed in the courthouse or somewhere? If so, where, what and how
do
I go about getting to them (& hopefully get copies!) "get my hands on
them"?
Thank-you for taking the time to read this! I hope someone can help me!
All
tips, suggestions, information and guidance appreciated!

Hello List:
I have an Obit of my g-g-g-grandfather who was married and lived in Vigo
County but then moved to Ogle County, IL in 1839. Is this obituary one that
would be suitable for the Obits? Would like to add him to the list if
permissible. He is Thomas U. Paddock, son of the below Paddock.
I am also looking for an obit on EBENEZER PADDOCK b. December 27, 1783
and died October 3, 1848. He died in Vigo County and is buried in New
Harmony Cemetery. If anyone has any information on his obit or death I would
appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you,
Sharon Ogle in Ogle County, IL
Peggy,
Is it possible the information could have been recorded in the Miscellaneous
files? We recorded our daughters birth in those after we returned from the
Philippines in 1956. I think those books are filmed and in the Vigo County
Library.
Mary
Kay,
Thank-you for your suggestions & information!
As for the estate's location, to which grandfather was a probable heir, I
don't know the location. Because the ancestor's names that are listed in the
power of attorney (when compared to the affidavit), as possible unsettled
estates, goes quite a-ways back, I really doubt they were located in Vigo
County. Several Ancestors are named but the last one named seems to be the
focus and this one would have been my grandfather's 4th great grandparents.
So far I have managed to research back to my grandfather's grandfather (born
1820), which was in IL.
As you can well imagine, if I could get good copies of the original papers
(including those documents he provided as proof of genealogy), well.....
words just can't express how exciting it would be!
Do you know if these papers would have been filed in Vigo Co., IN even if
the estate was located some where else? At the risk of sounding
foolish....What is a closed probate file?
All tips, suggestions, information and guidance appreciated!
Thank-you,
Peggy

HI all,
I've written before asking if anyone had any info on my Joseph Noblitt but
not had any luck.
I recently wrote to the Vigo County Health Department hoping to find out
when and where exactly he was born and died.
They told me to check with the Vigo County Public Library on 1 Library
Square in Terre Haute as they may have that info. I don't know if this is
true or not, but I think it's worth a try.
Does any one out there live out there and so, would that kind person be
willing to do a look up for me? I'll pay for copies and mailing costs.
I'm looking for Joseph Noblet (Noblitt, Noblett, Noblit, spelling varies).
He was born abt. 1828/29 somewhere in Vigo County and I'm told he died abt.
1868 (that could be wrong), also in Vigo County. I believe his parents were
Joseph Sr. and ?
When he died, Joseph had at least two children, William Riley and Alice(or
Mary, we can't confirm which one it is) and his wife may have been Lucinda
(Loyd) Noblitt.
I am working on this for my great uncle and I'm hoping to have the info
before I go for my visit on the 7th of October. He really wants to know when
and where Joseph was born and died. Joseph was my uncles g. grandfather.
Please email me directly if you can help.
Thank you very, very much in advance.

Hi:
Does anyone have access to Terra Haute directories?
I have an Abraham Sackrider married to Elizabeth Fuson. They had three
children listed as being born in Terra Haute c. 1856-60. Elizabeth and one
child are in New Harmony Cem., Prarietown as is an Eliza Sackrider, w/o
William. The other child is in Woodlawn Cem., TH.
Data on Abraham in Marshall, IL shows:
1844 Abraham Sackrider is mentioned as having done some work for a R W Adams
who died late in the year
1845 R W Adams sale of personal effects - Abraham purchased some items
name is listed as A Sackrider & Co. - this is the first time I have found
this??
1853 Abraham Sackrider purchased 40 acres of land in Clark Co - in Darwin
township - this is north and east of Marshall, ILL
Jan 1861 - Abraham Sackrider if mentioned in a mortgage regarding a loan to
James Alexander.
I have not located Abraham in the census records I have access to and
thought pehaps someone might have a city directory for years near 1850-60
whom might find the Sackriders or the A Sackrider & Co listed.

Hello,
I'm still trying to find out when Joseph Noblitt (Noblet, Noblett, Noblit,

It is believed he was born abt. 1828/29 in Vigo County and he died abt. 1868
also in Vigo County. Vigo County could be wrong though.
If anyone can help me find these things out please email me. I'd like to
know his exact birth and death dates and where he was buried.
His first wife was named Susan McGaughey and his second wife was Lucinda
Loyd. I have very little info on either of them.
Thanks in advance,

Greetings,
I am seeking information on the families of Rev. War veteran GURDIN BURNHAM
and his wife MARTHA CAHOON who settled in Vigo Co. before 1833, went to
Edgar Co., IL where he filed his Rev. War pension application in 1833, then
returned to Vigo Co., where both may have died.
Gurdin was from East Hartford, CT. He married Martha in Buckingham Co., VA
abt 1795. Gurdin and family traveled around quite a bit. One stop was Knox
Co., TN.
His pension papers indicate that in 1835 he had three sons and a daughter
living in Vigo Co. Likely the sons were HEZEKIAH BURNHAM, ORON BURNHAM, and
ALEXANDER BURNHAM.
HEZEKIAH BURNHAM m: Susanna Husong 9 Feb 1826 in Knox Co., TN.
A likely daughter of Gurdin/Martha, who stayed in Knox Co., TN was MARY ANN
BURNHAM, who m: Robert Cruze 16 Aprill 1823 [my line] in Knox Co., TN.
Another likely daughter of Gurdin/Martha was SALLY [Sarah] BURNHAM, who m:
Aaron Hood, 10 May 1823. It seems that this couple stayed in TN until the
1850 census, but then may have come to Vigo Co. sometime after that. The
biography of LEMUEL LONGHEAD on the Vigo Co., In Bios Forum indicates that
his wife, SARAH MALONE, whom he married 3 Dec 1872, was the daughter of
Andrew and Sarah (Burnham) Hood.
Some questions are:
--When did Gurdin die?
--Did Gurdin have a will in Vigo County?
--When did Martha die?
--Are there modern day descendants of Gurdin and Martha who may have Bible
or other records which have been passed down??
I appreciate any help.
