Ditto to what Charlotte said. The Vigo Co Obit index is awesome! I've found 18
ancestors on it so far!!

I'm trying to find info on James & Irena (DAY) PITTMAN. They were married on April
5, 1852 in Sullivan Co. James is the son of Sanford & Elizabeth (COTTON) PITTMAN.
Who were the parents of Irena?
James & Irena are found on the 1860 census in Vigo Co.
Children :
1. Thomas (found on 1860 census Vigo Co, IN)
2.Elizabeth PITTMAN was born Jun 28, 1858 in Vigo Co and died on Mar 26, 1928 in
Sullivan Co, IN. Elizabeth married Parmenas STUTSMAN on March 4 1875 in Sullivan
Co, IN
3. Lousia Jane Jennie PITTMAN was born Sept 1, 1862 and died on Jul 23, 1914 in
Clay Co, IN. Louisa Jane married Isaac FERGUSON on Nov 10, 1889 in Clay Co, IN.
In 1870 Louisa Jane is found living with the STUTSMAN in Clay Co. What happened to
James & Irena? I have not been able to find any more info for them.
Anyone else researching these lines? Any help greatly appreciated.
Nancy
In answer to Carleen, I believe the library has several indexes available
alphabetically by book title and author. I have found books and information
that were cross-referenced by title and author here before. Call the
library and ask about their system of operation. I am not defending them
because I am from Vigo County, I am defending them because I believe there
was some misinformation put out from somebody who apparently did not make or
take the extra effort to find out how the library works. Ms. Yates brings
up a great point about 'the employees reading.' It is a library! There
are students and volunteers working in the library at all hours. Students
will even bring their studies to the table. Other staff may be doing
research for me and others who are so far away. In times past, I have
approached some fairly young people sitting at the desk in the reader
section for help. NO PROBLEM! They put their book down and got me what I
wanted and even spent time showing me how to operate the reader and copier,
then, on top of that, they would come back after a while to see if
everything was alright. Please don't take the word of somebody who was
obviously having a bad hair day. Check things out your self. I think you
will be pleased.

Ok... my 2 cents. I walked into the genealogy library. Was greeted by the
nicest gentleman (Robert I believe). Told him I only had a about an hour to
spend and could he help me. In just a few minutes I was set up with 3 reels
of microfilm and 5 books with lots of information. In that short hour I
found more than I would have in ANY library. Just ask for help and the way
the library is set up won't matter.

Excuse me- I think we should show more respect for everybody's opinions.
Those who disagree or who bring up personal experience do NOT deserve
anyone's derision. So please stop any further personal attacks before I
report you to the head librarian!!

Hello to all,
I'm reading with interest the 'volley' of pro & con re: The Vigo County
Library.
Several years ago in my snail mail days before I joined the '90s and got a
computer, , , , , My inquiry for help to Vigo County Library was answered by
Nancy Sherrill, genealogy librarian. She was most helpful ,, sending me
several
copies of information she found on my ancestors. I was so excited to have
some
answers and several clues to continue my search. With that help I am back
two more generations on one line and three on another. Since I am in
California -
the trip to Terre Haute has not yet been possible. I don't know how the
library is organized , , , but, I do know that I appreciate that lady at
that library more
than I can say!
Just my 2 cents worth , , , Norma
I am probably never going to be able to visit the Terre Haute library and I
can see where some of you support your library and the people who work there,
but I have a question. If you have to ask someone or go to a card catolog to
find every single book ( I don't know the authors) how do you get anything
done? I like standing in front of the "Indiana" section in my library and
just pulling books out at random. Once found a family in Mississippi that I
never would have found if I had not have idly picked up a cemetery book for
the wrong end of the state ( to me) and there they were! I want to browse
in a certain state's books and not have to search just to find where they
are. Do I understand you can't do that? I guess you can get used to anything
if you have too. I'm sure the people there are great but I'd rather 'do it
myself". Carleen

In response to the message from Mary from Michigan; what a complete
downer!!! I am originally from Terre Haute and have 'never' had any
difficulty finding what I needed. I can't begin to number the times I have
visited that particular library. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ASK!!! Mr. David
Lewis and staff in Special Collections have been most responsive to my
inquiries, in person, y mail, and by e-mail. I don't think there is a
library around that is perfect. The staff at the Vigo County Library are
some of the best I have encountered in my 18 years of family research. I
have visited libraries in Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Virginia, Arkansas,
and a number of other States and Indiana has some of the best.

Since that's not a very location-specific address, if you're visiting in
person, it's on 7th street between Poplar and Walnut.

Mary from Michigan,,,your description of the Vigo County Library!! I have
never heard of that in my life! How does anyone use it? Can't wait to tell
the Librarians here! They won't believe it! CBC
In defense of the Vigo County Library, I was there in May of 1998 and found
it to be a very big help to me and my genealogy research. I used the City
Directories on microfiche, they were in drawers, in order, by year. I was
shown how to use their equipment, and as a matter of fact had to ask for help
several times and was immediately and courteously helped. The library may
not be set up exactly the way everyone individually would like, but for
someone without a lot of experience it seemed quite effective, and the staff
was very generous with their assistance. They have also been responsive to
snail mail and email inquiries. I can't wait to go back, I'm just sorry
everyone didn't have such a great experience as I did.

Just an observation - and a warning.
The Vigo County Library in Terre Haute is arranged alphabetically by
AUTHOR, but not by category first.
Yes, genealogy is in a seperate room, but there is no rhyme or reason -
except the author's name.Through the computer, I found a civil war book I
thought might help me. Going to the shelf, I found the book flanked by a
census listing on one side and a book about an Irish uprising on the
other!!!
The microfilm was just as bad. Looking at a Indiana soundex led me next
to some sort of technical data. The soundex didn't continue to the next
census year soundex, nor to the census itself, nor to a soundex from another
state from the same year. Very frustrating!!!
But, I guess this system makes it convenient - make that simple- for the
employees! Never before have I been to a library where almost all of the
employees are being paid to READ. Every room had employees - they are the
ones with a name tags hanging around their neck so you can find them if you
look - slouched at a desk READING!!
My husband often accompanys me on these out of town adventures, but then
goes off to do his own thing. On Friday, our first day at the library, after
about 3 hours, I was about ready to scream in frustration, so I went looking
for him (he had the car keys). He can usually be found in a technical or
scientific section as a first choice, or science fiction as a second. It
just made my day to find technical and science fiction filed together,
alphabetically by AUTHOR!!!! Yes, I did go back on Saturday, with the intent
of spending one hour. I lasted 45 minutes!
Sooo, be prepared to spend a LOTof time researching your topic.
(The library building is very pretty, though)

I visited this site also. Did I miss something? Was there a place to order
the obits?
HI!
I can't thank enough those of you who worked on this project . I have
found 13 relatives after months of looking. They are my James ancestors
including Manonia and Winona my great grandmother and her mother
respectively. These names are unusual and have been elusive. I believe
they are Cherokee names as like so many individual like myself have oral
histories of native American ancestors. When I saw them listed, I was
ecstatic. I am sure my ggrandfather James is in this group but since I
don't know his name I must wait to see what the obits I've requested will
tell me. I am one happy researcher!
