Wouldn't it be great if we could get something like this going in Vigo Co!
FYI, Fayette Co has a cemetery "restorationist", who is paid by the county
to restore old cemeteries. Here's the article:

I have been trying to find information on Newton Rukes(b.abt 1870-IN) he
was the brother to my ggrandmother. He was born in Vigo Co.,IN -----
The last place I found him was the 1880 census living with his
grandparents, Jacob and Mary Hoffman. His sister, Hannah(10), brother,
Babel(7), and also a cousin, William Summerville(12), Newton was 8.
Then I lost track of him. Could you find something about him????
Thank you Anne

Hello,
I am the new State Coordinator for the Indiana Census Project and would like
to urge each of you to consider transcribing a Census.
I along with about a million other Genealogists would Thank you.
Our Project was started by volunteers of The USGenWeb
Project, to transcribe all of the US Federal Census' and upload them to the
Internet where they will be available in a searchable archive for
all, for FREE.
We provide our volunteer transcribers with either a database
Program, for census years 1850 and 1860, that has been written
exclusively for this Project, or a spreadsheet template for all other
years. Our programmer is writing updates that will eventually include
all other years. For MAC users we have a Coordinator who specializes in
MAC's and she will get you the templates you need.
At this time we are unable to provide our transcribers with a
copy of the census for the county they wish to transcribe. Each of you
must obtain your own copy of the census you sign up for. You will be
volunteering your time to transcribe and you will be volunteering the
acquisition of the census information.
This information can be acquired on CD or in book form.
Please consider helping this worthwhile project.
Best wishes
Sandra

Harrison Twp is the City of Terre Haute today. Years ago part of it was
rural. Today the city has expanded into Honey Creek Twp., Lost Creek Twp.,
and maybe Sugar Creek Twp. on the north side.
Dear Group,
I am searching for my Vigo County ancestors, and have hit the 1882 brick wall. Which is, as I'm sure you know, the earliest date for which birth and death records are available. Does anyone have other sources of information? Census, cemetery, anything? The parties in whom I am interested are:
ELI A. SYKES -- probably born between 1840 and 1850, Indiana. Possibly in Terre Haute.
MARTHA CRAMPTON -- same as Eli.
They are the parents of GEORGE W. SYKES, born in 1874, whom I believe is my great-grandfather. He did not (I also believe) marry my great-grandmother, BESSIE HICKLIN. She gave birth to my grandfather in 1892.
A related question: Is there any way to tell if this George Sykes is the one who did not marry my great-grandmother? What do genealogists do about this?

The best way to find birth/death information prior to 1882 is through cemetery
records. The Vigo Co. library has that information and you can write to them,
providing as much information as you can, and they will do a look up for you.
They will ask for the cost of copies and postage.
If you have a Family History Center (Mormon Church) near you, they also have
the Vigo Co. cemetery information available on microfiche. Using their computers,
find the catalog, then go to regional > US > IN > Vigo Co. (it's been a while,
so I hope this is right....they have helpers there if you need assistance).
Once you find the cemetery info., order it from Salt Lake City. It should cost
less than $1.00.
You can also find approximate dates of death from probate records. The Vigo
Co. library has an index. There are also probate indexes for sale at some online
book stores. Ye Olde Genealogy Shoppe is one of them....use your search engine
to find them (I don't have the urls handy).
Good luck,
Kim Holly

Hello,
Is there anyone out there that happens to have the 1870 IN census CD
index? I'm looking for a John DORSEY in Vanderburgh Co.
Any help that you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Jan Uffelmann
I'm not sure about most families, but much of my family followed
the same migration to find work in the coal mines, and clay works. Just a
thought.
Good Luck
