BRESSIN
My mother-in-law's grandmother was Elizabeth Julieann BRESSIN b. March 30,
1864 in Terrehaute, Vigo County, IN, to Joseph & Josephine BRESSIN.
Elizabeth married Charles JOHNSON of Michigan & died in Muskegon around
1941.
My MIL says that her grandmother (Elizabeth BRESSIN JOHNSON) was an "Indian
Woman" with "braids down past her butt." I know that there is/was quite a
population of Wea in the area, but I have no idea if this is the right
tribe, or where to go from here. I can't seem to find BRESSIN much of
anyplace & my suspicion is that her parents were their names changed to
something more European-American (note the Joseph/Josephine.) Does anyone
have any idea where I should start my search? Apparently my MIL spent 3
years pouring through Mormon records for these folks with no luck. My
feeling is that in 1860 or so nobody was paying much attention to Native
peoples. Are their any Native American genealogical research resources in
the Vigo area?
HELP?
I only have one name for Vigro County and it seems nobody can find it.

Just an observation.....It seems so strange to me to see all these surnames
that I'm familiar with. I was born and raised in Vigo Co, so I guess it
shouldn't be so surprising to me. Goes to show that a lot of people stayed
in the same place, I guess.

Janei (and all),
It really helps, when sending queries like this, if you can give some kind
of time frame. If you don't have an exact date, give an estimate i.e.
1830-1860.
For Janei, have you checked the 1850 Vigo Co census that's online? (it's
still not all there yet). I know I transcribed some Bogard's, but don't
remember which township. I only remember because I went to school with a
girl with that surname <grin> You can find a link to the census at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~invigo/vigo.htm

Appreciate any help janei
Hi Everyone:
Thanks to all whom confirmed Terre Haute as being in Vigo Co. Now I
have a question.
A pioneer settler, John Sackrider in Crawfoerd Co., IL left many
descendants in that area. Subsequently, late nineteen century, some
moved to Terre Haute where there are some living today.
There was an unattached Abraham Sackrider and wife, Elizabeth Fuson who
had a son, Lyman Sackrider born in Terre Haute 26 Nov 1856. I can not
place Abraham into above John's family. Lyman the son later settled in
Casey Il and is buried there. Abraham leaves no burial record. An
obscure note indicates that Elizabeth Fuson Sackrider is buried
southwest of Terre Haute but gives no specifics. One other bit of data
says Abraham had property in Ckark Co., IL about 1853 which is when
Lyman was born in Terre Haute,IN
As you can observe the info is sketchy. I have no info on the Fuscon
family. Is anyone familiar with either the Sackriders or Fusons of
1850?
Fletcher Bishop
Names that I am researching in Vigo Co. are:
Eli THRONEBURG--sometimes listed as THORNBURGH
Francis Marion (Frank) THORNBURGH
Joseph Warren SNODGRASS
and daughter Laura Ellen SNODGRASS
also YORK & CUNNINGHAM.
Elizabeth Andersen
"History of Vigo Co"
The original townships in Vigo County were laid off by the board of
commissioners Mar 11, 1819, and were four in number. The first one defined
in the record is Honey Creek twp, bounded as follows: "Commencing and
running with the south line of the county from the rvier to the east line of
the county to the line dividing Townships 11 and 12 north, thence with the
siad line to where the main branch of the Noney Creek crosses the same,
thence down said creek, where it empties into the Wabash river, and down the
stream to the place of beginning".
Wabash township, on the north part of the county was formed as follows: "A
line commencing at the mouth of Otter creek, following up said creek to
where the middle or main branch crosses the line dividing Ranges 6 and 7,
thence north on siad line to the "Indian Boundary Line", then following this
boundary line to the Wabash river, and thence down said stream to the place
of beginning".
Harrison was all that territory in Vigo county lying east of the Wabash
river, and bounded on the north by Wabash township, and on the south by
Honey Creek township.
Independence Township was all that portion of the county lying west of the
Wabash river.
--------------
Has anyone ever seen any reference to Independence township in their
rooting?
