You can't get the SS record at the local office. I would get the death
certificate first. It sometime takes a long while to get your results from
the Social Security people. Here's a link from rootsweb that explains the
procedure very well.

I have a distant relative in GA who is wanting to find some info out
on a
deceased relative, she and I are going to split the cost of optaining a
SS application record as the person died in the late 1960's. I have some
questions for those of you who have done this. Part of my relative's
note is this:
I've read all sorts of different opinions on obtaining SS appls. One said
all of these have been computerized and are available at local SS office.
It said to keep saying Freedom of Information when making your request.
My question is-- can you do this locally? When I have visited the SS
office in Evansville you need an appt to talk to anyone, and you
generally have to wait for the appt. Is it better to do it online?
Any info about this from anyone who has done this before will be
appreciated. Online might be as fast as waiting for an appt. And
how long does it take? Thanks so much, and to avoid email clutter on
the mail lists, you can email me personally at gkeusch(a)psci.net
Again, others might want to know who have not done this before-- so I
guess it is a judgement call. Helen Zuber Keusch
