Message Board Post:
Elder James Martin had a son, James Martin, Junior who married Sally Williams, daughter of
Simon Williams. Polly Martin married Bennett Williams, Simon's son. Polly and James
Junior's marriages took place about a year apart in Warren County, Kentucky, and the
first of their marriages took place about 6 months after Elder James Martin and Simon
Williams posted bond for James to perform marriages there (June 1805).
Colonel James Martin would have been no more than about 14 years old when Elder James
Martin was born, thus Elder James Martin could not have been his son. If you look at the
earliest approved DAR applications for this lineage you will notice the applicants start
with folks with direct knowledge of Colonel James Martin's children to those that are
several generations removed (or more accurately, not even related). To the family history
provided by Josephine (Adams) Perry in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record,
Volume 43, No. 2, page 194 (April 1912) subsequent applications from Indiana have appended
various fantasy family members. If you research those other family members, you'll
find that some could not have been Col James' children and others were ancestors of
the applicants. Somebody was trying way to hard to have a quasi-famous ancestor, but
Cinderella's slipper doesn't fit!
The only things that ties these two Martin families together is that they were both named
James, both men had wives named Milly, and both lived in South Carolina at some point.
But they aren't the same person and Elder James Martin was too old to have been
Colonel James Martin's son.
So it was actually Elder James Martin, Senior who was the Baptist Preacher. It was James
Martin, Junior who married Sally Williams.
