Call the Office of Vital Records again, speak to someone else and ask for
their fax number so that you can fax them your Driver's License and a
notarized statement explaining your relationship to the decedent.
A notarized statement works in most states, or a Declaration under penalty
of perjury might also work.
No state requires you to "prove" your relationship; that's hogwash.

I have paid for similar searches for death certificates from them
before. I have only explained in writing who the person was and the
relationship to me.

Maybe send a family group sheet or ancestor chart or copy of a census record
.......something to show you are interested in family history not identity
theft. I don't think they really want total proof like we think of it in
the 21st century. Just a little proof you are who you say you are and your
intentions for the death certificate is only for research. As a side
note.........think about asking for a photo copy of the death certificate
not a certified copy. In the past I have paid more money for a certified
copy (stamped with a seal) when all I really needed was a copy. Karen Ver

Have A Good Day,

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting a copy of a Death
Certificate from the Vanderburgh County Health Department? The person
I just spoke with said, in addition to sending a money order and copy
of my driver's license, I needed to prove relationship to a g-g-
grandparent who died in Evansville in 1883. The money order and
driver's license I can provide; the proof of relationship is
impossible. The documentation just doesn't exist beyond my grandmother.
Thanks for any suggestions.......Gail Duckworth Prewitt, great-great
granddaughter of
Johann Peter Blesch

I think I'd want to speak to someone else in the office. After 100 years, I
don't think they can actually do that -- just an opinion.

I'd ask them what type of proof that they needed, that you would be more
than happy to obtain it for them. When I was in Vanderburgh, I just wrote a
note that stated that I needed the death certificate of my ggrandfather and
stated his name. I signed the paper and that was it. There is no proof that
they could verify anyway.
