I also found obituary records listed under both Schirle and Shirley. There are many more
Shirleys than Schirles. I suspect some family may have anglicized their last name. John
Matthew was listed under both spellings.
Contact the Vanderburgh County Health department for John's Death Certificate. It
should list his birth location and parents names. However, I am told that the Health
Department is not very cooperative. You may have to fill out a form before they will send
anything.
It appears that the family was Lutheran since some children attended Christ Lutheran
Church. I believe Christ Lutheran is still active, so they may have records.
Willard Library in Evansville contains the genealogical records for Evansville. They have
transcripts of some church records, census, etc records. Census records are available at
Willard. They are likely your best source. I would contact Willard library and ask them
for advice and assistance.
You should plan to visit Evansville. A lot of this work is much simpler when you have
"boots on the ground."
Finally, Ancestry is a robust sources if you don't mind the membership fee.
Good Luck. I would like to see what you find.
Mike
