First, a special thanks to all who have previously listed info and
recommended Willard. Since a number of people have asked about my first
genealogy trip I thought I might share with anyone who might have
interest or fear in "going it alone". This was my first dive into the
deep end of Genealogy and I'm sure they spoiled me rotten. This is the
type of treatment all newcomers should experience, especially if or when
they become discouraged. I've recently been there & almost went back to
fighting the wife to surf the TV remote. I'll try to make this short? I
walked up the huge, old oak stairs to the second floor and was
immediately approached by a lady who asked if she could be of
assistance. OK, so maybe I looked scared but not as much as I was at the
large Oak Hill Cemetery, but that's another story :( I was given a
folder (free) which included tips on beginning genealogical research, a
description of all their holdings and procedures, blank family tree and
record source sheets, etc., etc. She (I apologize & kick myself for not
remembering this fine lady's name, but I will get it) asked what I would
like to accomplice and then the ball rolled for about six hours. We had
enough books and film out for ten people. She pulled books and films,
loaded the machines and seemed to be as excited I was from our findings.
I made over twenty copies e.g. Apps/lists for marriage in KY & NC,
census from IN-KY-NC, cemetery records, etc. and all for a little over
$2.00. I planned to search my GRAUL's from Evansville but received a
bundle on my RILEY's from KY and Orange Co., NC. I offered...she
gracefully refused but was obviously pleased when I fed their jar used
to donate to purchasing books. I understand that the TRI-STATE
GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY helps support this library so a big TOOT to them as
well as the person who hires the Willard employees.
