Hi Listers,
I see so many obits on these lists that I felt it was time for a
little celebration of life, while the living are still with us, so to
speak.
My father is Oliver Edward Attwood, know affectionately as Ollie,
and to real close friends he was known as Gator, I guess stemming from
the combination of Ollie-gator in his younger days in Evansville.
Last Sunday in Tucson Arizona, pop celebrated his 90th birthday with
family and friends. He is still quite spry, some hard of hearing, but
does well living by himself, and continues to drive his 1970 Mustang to
the grocery on occasion.
He was born in Evansville on Dec, 5, 1909, the son of Edward Attwood
and Laura Virginia Vickers.
Interesting to note is that Edward Attwood, my grandfather, was the
only one killed in the great storm of December 8, 1917 in a Railroad
accident at the location of Division and Rowley (hope I spelled that
correctly), 82 years ago today. The Evansville Press has often done a
story on this storm, and not listed my grandfather by name.
In October of 1941, pop married a beautiful woman from Henderson,
Anne Elizabeth Shofner, my mother.
My father worked for many businesses in Evansville, but the longest
was for Servel for over 20 years, where he was a machinist, making
screws for refrigerators.
After our family line lived in the Henderson-Evansville area for
over 100 years (<1850-1950), my parents uprooted us in 1952 to move to
Tucson, Arizona.
My father has a sister still living, Grace Vera Attwood aged 87,
also living here in Tucson, and their older brother, Chet Attwood, died
in 1996, at the age of 87. I would say we have some good genes from this
side of our family.
I hope to hear from anyone who knew the Attwood family in
Evansville. They first lived at 1813 E, Louisiana St. in a house built
by my great-grandfather Alvis Lee Vickers. Later they lived on Villa
Drive, and when I was born in 1948 we lived on Oak. I have been to
Evansville many times and enjoy my visits immensely.
Just thought I needed to celebrate with you the life and times of my
pop, Ollie Attwood.

Regards,
Bill Attwood

It's another beautiful day in the Sonoran Desert!
