There definitely was a Cholera Epidemic of 1850/51 on the River Boats that traveled up and
down the Mississippi.
My Gr-gr-grandfather (James Farrell Ward) died in Natchez, Mississippi at that time after
contracting Cholera on one of those boats when he was Captian from Muhlenberg Co., Ky to
Mississippi. His daughter (Mary Margaret Ward) later moved to Warrick Co., IN and married
James L. Miller.
I have read of other passangers traveling to Illinois and other parts west who have also
contracted the disease while traveling at that same time.
I do not know if it transferred to the general population as well. But I immagine it
could have, especially if a passanger was not aware they were ill and carried it home to
family members.
