I found your James in 1870 in Union CO., KY, Raleigh pct, #119-- James is
single, age 34, and is living with a Joseph Reburn 29 and Joseph's wife,
Mary, and the Reburn children.
1880 census of Union CO KY has James Davenport, 44 KY; wife is Matilda
38 and their children are listed.
1900 census of Union CO., KY shows Matilda Davenport, Mar 1842, widowed,
9 ch/ 8 living and some of the children are listed.
Could your James have been buried in Union CO where he lived? That would
make more sense in the 1890's, than to bury him in Evansville, or even
Henderson-- unless he had relatives who already had burial ground paid for.
You might try subscribing to the Union CO., KY, mail list and see if you get
any hits, or try to find someone there (and in Henderson and Vanderburgh
Counties) with access to the cemetery books. If he has no marker, he
probably will not be in the book. Chances are, though, he might have a
gov. marker due to his Civil War service. However, that might depend on
which side he was on-- KY had soldiers who fought for either side since KY
was a supposedly neutral state. Union soldiers could receive a government
stone, I don't know about the confederate soldiers.
I am also curious, was Louisa Matilda Catholic that she was buried in
St. Joe Cem in Evansville, or did she remarry and convert? The St. Joseph
office (can be found online) is very helpful if you call. There is also
another St. Joe Cem at St. Joe, IN (in the northern part of Vanderburgh CO),
so make sure you get the right St. Joe-- don't know the street but it is on
what I call Mesker Park Drive. Guess I am dating myself on this.
Good luck. Helen Zuber Keusch

Chris, my great-grandfather was a Confederate Civil War Soldier from Union
Co., Ky. He was in a POW camp at Rock Island KY, and released in 1865.
He died in Henderson KY in Oct 1897, and is supposedly buried in Henderson
Cem, where the family owned a plot. However, a cousin who walked the
Cemetary could not find him there or in the IOOF Cem in Henderson. His
name is James Reburn Davenport. His wife was Louisa Matilda Wathen, she
is buried in St Joseph's Cem Evansville.
Does the Tri-County Genealogical Society have records of other soldiers
who died and buried in Henderson, or just Oak Hill Cem in Evansville?
Thanks, Sharon Miller Sheridan
