I have a question regarding residency requirements for declaring intent for
applying for US citizenship about 1840-45. I have a John MULLEN who came
from Ireland between 1833 when his son Moses was born in Ireland and 1838
when his next child, Margaret was born in Providence, RI. He was still in
Providence when his next daughter, Mary was born in 1841. But, his next
daughter, Catharine, was born in Davenport, IA, in 1844. John became a US
citizen in May 1856, but on his "certificate" he stated he had made his
declaration in Vanderburgh County, IN. I'm guessing, with where his
children were born, and when, that he would have been in Vanderburgh County
between 1841 and 1844. How long would he have to be living in the area
before he could make his declaration? Would these applications still be at
the courthouse or would I need to check with the state? Any help would be
appreciated.
