Surname: LANE, OWEN, CROWDER, BLEDSOE
-------------------------
Dora Belle (Lane) Kaiser was born 15 Jan 1892,IN; died 14 Sep 1977, Putnam
Co, IN. Finished her education with the 8th grade since her help was needed
acutely at home, working the farm and helping raise more than a dozen step-brothers
and step-sisters. Her only child was Pherba Doretha Ellis b. 20 Dec 1912,
Cuzco, Orange Co, IN.
As a young single mother she moved to Evansville, Vanderburgh Co, IN, about
1917, working as a cigarmaker. Later she ran a roominghouse on Blackford
Avenue. In 1937 "Belle" married Florian Henry Kaiser, also of Evansville.
She longed for the country life and fulfilled her dream by buying a small
farm east of Newburgh and near Yankeetown in the 1940's. Here she enjoyed
visits from her two grandchildren--also tending an ever-expanding vegetable
garden, caring for a cow, a goat, and assorted dogs. Her husband "Henry"
sometimes took the grandchildren fishing in Pigeon Creek. When the harvest
was plentiful, Belle and Henry sold produce from the truck in the residential
areas of Evansville.
In 1967 she lost her husband to pulmonary thrombosis, after a fall he suffered
while re-opening the house, having left the keys inside accidentally. Eventually
her little farm was bought by Alcoa to become part of an aluminum plant,
built in the 60's near Yankeetown.
She returned to make her home in Evansville until several strokes turned
her into an invalid, and she moved to Greencastle to be near her daughter.Belle
died of pnuemonia in October 1977 and was buried in the New Winchester
cemetery, where her daughter and husband were later to rest beside her.
She is the daughter of Orlena Adeline (Owen) Lane Bledsoe and James H.
Lane, with no full siblings surviving infancy. She did have many step-brothers
and step-sisters of the Bledsoe and Lane surname however. Her step-father
was Jonathan Bledsoe of Dubois Co, IN. She descends from southern Indiana
pioneers, Benjamin Owen & Adeline Crowder, through her mother. Belle was
survived by daughter Pherba and two grandchildren, Carol Lois Haywood and
Edward John Buecher, as well as by beloved step-sister, Bertha Alma (Bledsoe)
Wininger of Orange Co, IN, and dear cousin, Leon Taylor of Farmersburg,
IN.
