The old Hebron School building was located on the south side of Lincoln Avenue, directly
north of the present school and its front door faced Lincoln. Directly north of the
school, across Lincoln, on top of the hill, a very large home, a mansion, was built, the
first home in what had been a large corn field. I started at Hebron in the fall of 1937
in Miss Laura Shacklett's 4th grade (3rd grade was also in the room,
since at that time the building only had four classrooms). I don't recall the 1st
grade teacher'as name but the 5th and 6th grades were taught by Mrs. Sue Gresham Reed
and the 7th and 8th grades were taught by the school principal, Mr. C. D. Robinson.
Cafeteria was in the basement and lunch was 10 cents including milk or orange juice. We
had outdoor privys (rest rooms). Before I graduated from the 8th grade, (yes, we even got
diplomas and wore caps and gowns). All the county schools in Knight Township participated
in a joint ceremony; Hebron, Harper, Caze, Lodge, at the Evansville College (now U of E)
auditorium. They were not part of the school system of Evansville, they were headed by
the Knight Township trustee and the township had to pay tuition to the Evansville school
system for each and every county student in attendance at Bosse or the other two city high
schools, Central and Reitz. Weinbach Avenue was the eastern city limits of Evansville at
the time.

I'm not sure where the original school was, somewhere in
the Lincoln Ave. and Green River Road area
(Knight Township in Vanderburgh County) . I don't know if the old
school was torn down and the new one built in the same location
The book "Green River Road : from cornfields to concrete" has a
chapter about Hebron School. I'll look it up.
