Also have a Burtis in my family who is a "puzzle".
My grandfather's name was Richard Hale Gambling (born 1880 in Mamaroneck, NY). His
half sister Frances L Gambling was born in 1858 in NYC. Her parents were Helen and
William Michael Gambling. Frances married Edward S. Burtis on May 20,1873 (according to
NYC Methodist Marriages, 1785 - 1893, vol 1, Index of Brides) at age 17 or 18. Probably
about age 13 or 14, Florence's mother Helen died. William married around 1869 or 1870
my great grandmother (Annie B Knight). Annie was the only girl in a family of boys and
family legend has it that Annie was not partial to girls. Getting married at the earliest
age possible would be an excellent way to escape a difficult step mother. I don't know
Edward's background or whether Frances and Edward had children. Frances and Edward
Burtis are buried at Greenwood Union Cemetary in Rye, NY. Probably early 1900's
(definitely after 1883). The cemetary deed had 6 plots. In burial order, they are:
1)George and Dorothy Raw-haven't the sli!
ghtest idea who they are 2) Helen Gambling (died sometime in 1860's), 3)William
Michael Gambling- died 1883 4)Blanche Gambling (?) -could be William's sister or Step
Mother, 5)Fanny-no date of death 6) No one listed. Current funeral director says Edward
is burried there, but doesn't know where. Could be # 6 or 5 with Fanny. Looking at
1880 census information, there were several Burtis families in Long Island and New Jersey.
Hope this helps you and others, Jack.
