I have info. on where they came from. The name was spelled Koenemann; my paternal great
great grandmother was Laura Koenemann Grote; Gustav was one of her brothers. Gustav and
his parents and several siblings arrived May 24, 1850, on the Clotilde through the Port of
New Orleans. They are from Herdecke-an-der-Ruhr, Westphalia. His parents names were
Diedrich Henrich Koenemann and Catharina Elisabeth Christina Kessler. You can find all
their dates and ancestry on the LDS site. Any questions, just let me know. I've had a
heck of time tracing this line because of the spelling change, and Gustav is the only one
of the siblings I've been able to find. The only way I found him is by knowing that
Laura's son, Ferdinand, my great grandfather, worked on a farm with his uncles until
he was 16. Lo and behold, I found him listed with Gustav and Rachel in the 1860 census.
By the time Gustav went to Illinois, he had married someone named Freda, and his daughter
Mary was married t!
o a Charles Sanders. By the way, Laura's name at birth was Sophia Wilhelmina
Eleonore, and in Germany she went by Eleonore--I have no idea when or why she started
using Laura; her husband was Johann August Friedrich Wilhelm Grote, but he went by Wilhelm
and never came to the US.
Sincerely,
Karen Grote Ferb
