Notes for CHARLES HENRY DEUTSCHBERG:
Charles Henry (Carl Heinrich) studied medicine at the University in Bratislava. He filed
his PhD dissertation on congentital birth pathologies on November 28, 1822, written
entirely in Latin, with hand-drawn illustrations. He received Highest Honors in Medicine
and Surgery.
Charles' VITA cites his birthdate and place, and honors his father, Christian
Deutschberg and his wife Maria nee Matusch.
As a boy, he attended the school at Niesky (1803), and later The School of the
Moravian/Bohemian Brothers, under the directorship of Ludwig Koelberg. He graduated from
the Niesky School in 1816, after devoting himself to the study of all the humanities.
Therafter, he spent a year in theological studies at the Seminary.
In November of 1817, he enrolled at the University of Jenna, to pursue the natural
sciences. He lists all his professors in the subjects of physics, experimental chemistry,
metallurgy, botany, psychology, history, physiology, anatomy and pathology.
The political climate forced him to leave Jenna, and return to Bratislava, Moravia, where
he enrolled to study with Dr. Friedrich van Raumer, the Dean of Medicine there. Charles
lists his professors in plant physiology, pathology, pharmaceutics, chemistry, infectious
diseases, and clinical practice.
Charles went on to serve as a Surgeon in the Prussian Army.

AKA (Facts Pg): "Carl Heinrich"
Child of CHARLES DEUTSCHBERG and AMELIA GOETZ is:
3. i. CHARLES ARTHUR3 DEUTSCHBERG, b. February 13, 1834, Gradenfeld, Prussia; d. July 24,
1889, La Crosse, WI.
Charles Arthur came to the USA in 1862 ("Germans in America, V. 17, p. 406) , and
joined the Civil War. He served in Civil War under his mother's maiden name, GOETZ.
After serving in the war, Charles briefly returned to Germany to visit his family.
Charles married JULIA CHAROLETTE SOMMERFELDT (also spelled Samerfeldt), who came to the
USA in 1865. They met on the ship "Eugenie" sailing from Hamburg to New York,
docking in New York on June 5, 1866, when Charles returned to the USA. Julia was the
widow of WILLIAM LAYMAN and had a small son by him. Charles and Julia married in La
Crosse, Wisconsin on August 25, 1866.
Charles and Julia had three children: Amelia Ernstine, Ida Benz, and Martha. Ida married
a man named Abraham.
Julia Sommerfeldt also had a sister, Ernestine Sommerfeldt. Ernestine was married to
MICHAEL LEESKE. They came to the USA about 1867 and lived with Charles and Julia. Michael
Leeske?s family were peasant farmers on an estate in the Brandenburg Province, Prussia.
I have extensive information on this family in the US. I would like to make contact with
someone who has information on either the Deutschberg or Sommerfeldt families from Germany
(Prussia).
