Cindy, the way I read the article is that Assumption was the first Catholic
Church in Evansville, then Holy Trinity-- origanized in 1849 and the
building of it was finished in 1851. I don't think they tore it down,
but merely added to it, increasing its size.
It is an interesting article and thanks again for sending. You stated
eons ago you were connected to a Hanley/Handley family. Browning has some
Hanley/Handley obits that do not connect to mine. Would they be yours?

Helen and all,
I would be surprised if the Holy Trinity which burned in 1950 was the
original church. There is also a website about St. Mary's, which
indicates that it is either not the original building or has had a lot
of changes made over the years.
The best place to find info on this sort of material is the Browning
local history database. This article is about Holy Trinity
http://local.evpl.org/views/viewimage.asp?ID=708045 . It seems to
indicate the parish was organized in 1849 but built its church in 1851.
I notice that the Browning articles don't seem to appear when I do a
Google search, but it is a wonderful resource.
