From Kenneth P. McCutchan's book, From then til now...History of
McCutchanville:
Saundersville was laid out in 1819 by John Ingle.
The plat covered 160 acres of land with a public
square 266 feet each way. It was a part of a 960
acre tract aquired by Mr. Ingle from the government.
A state road was laid out to by-pass the town. When the
route was not changed, citizens of Saundersville
(104 of them) signed a petition to have a road built
to them from Mechanicsville (Stringtown). When this
petition failed, Saundersville began to die. In 1827
the street and alley easements in the original plat
were canceled. The settlers began to leave. Some went
to Evansville and others followed John Ingle a short
distance west to establish Inglefield.
