The Southern Indiana Hospital for the Insane (aka Woodmere) was on the east
side of Evansville, and built about 1890 or so. I live in Dubois CO and
have found in my researches where folks were taken for the hospital for the
insane-- these are stories in the newspapers of that era. The news
didn't leave any stones unturned, no privacy in those days. Articles
even told of people being jailed, gave names, while awaiting transportation
to the hospital, usually by the sheriff if the family couldn't do it. It
had to be a tragic thing as so little was known about mental diseases back
then. There was a fire in 1943 which all the records were burned, so
there are very few records on any folks who stayed at the hospital. There
was a cemetery on grounds for the inmates (the patients were often referred
to as inmates). I don't know if the dead were disinterred later. As
to Smith Funeral Home, I have not heard of it-- I am familiar with the
area from WWII on. There may have been a Smith Funeral Home. I am
sure someone else out there can add more. I am interested in knowning
more about the hospital. The buildings are gone-- I remember how it used
to look, it was a very foreboding looking place. Helen Zuber Keusch
forever searching the EAKINS, FORD/FOARD, MELTON, WALCUP, SANDEFUR, EZELL,
HANDLEY, THOMASSON, BIGGERSTAFF, ZUBER, GUTEKUNST/GOODART, ANTHIS, BANGERT,
LAND, CRABTREE, BENNETT, EDWARDS, REEVES, WOFFORD families--my lines; and on
hubby's side the families of MEHRINGER, SCHITTER/SCHUETTER, HOCHGESANG,
SCHMITT, HURST, BECHER, KEUSCH, ZIMMERMAN, ACKERMAN, BURGER, and HOPF (and
some side-lines).

Could anyone tell me anything about the Hospital for Insane? Also is the
Smith Funeral Home still in business and if not would any records still be
availible. An ancestor Sophia Ebert died 20 Dec 1895 and these two places
are mentioned on her certificate of death. She is buried in St. Joseph
Cemetery, is that still in use today.
