I found the article on Ben Newman, Jr interesting as I remember the Newman
name associated with my
Great Grandpa John R Capps.
I looked back on my notes and found in the Evansville Directory for 1892
there was a ad under "Plumbers
& Gas Fitters" for a "Capps and Newman" at 417 Upper 3rd.. Their
names
were listed as John R Capps
and Walter Newman. It is listed as "Capps & Newman" until 1894.
The Evansville City Directory in 1895 lists a "Capps and Schaefer" at 404
Upper 3rd until 1897.
From 1898 until 1900 John R Capps is listed only as a plumber and not
associated with any
plumbing Company. I was not suprised because after that the 1900 census in
St Louis Mo lists John R Capps
family with his brother-in-law John Regan. We thought John R Capps probably
lost his business and
came to live to live with his wife's brothers family. We do not know how he
lost the business but do know he
had a alcohol problem and thought maybe that had something to do with it.
I saw that the address that is listed for Ben Newman Jr is 400 block Upper
Third St the same address as
"Capps and Newman" back in 1892. From what I could get out of the article
he started the business in
1901 as he was in business there for 12 years and in 1913 he started a
plumbing business with his brother
W Newman (could that be the Walter Newman back in 1892) and George B
Johnson.
Does anyone out there know what relationship there is between the Newman or
Schaefer with John R Capps
family? Does anyone know anything about the Capps family that I have not
listed?
Would appreciate any information you can give us.
Thanks,
Nancy

I find two Bedford families plus another young man, Isaac - 23, who is
working as a farmhand. The other family besides David is William Bedford,
who was born in 18240, wife Ann, and their six children. One child is
also named William, born in 1841 in England. Here's an article about a
Ben Newman, Jr. who is a maternal grandson of William Bedford. This
article is from May, 1925. It refers to the Bedfords as a pioneering
family of Evansville.

The cross street two houses away from me in Evansville is named Bedford
Avenue. I have a couple of other articles about the Bedford family if you
would be interested. Email me at my private email address
(merje94(a)yahoo.com) and I'll send the images to you as a jpg file.
