Thank you for the additional information. I had already concluded that Arthur was born
out of wedlock. I am still confused that Arthur's birth certificate from Texas lists
a Clyde Ward a painter age 22 from Tenn as his father. This birth certificate lists
Evansville as his birthplace, which may be where Nellie's father was living after her
mother divorced him prior to 1900. Perhaps Nellie was sent to him to have the baby. Is
it possible that they never would have filed a birth record in Evansville? And yes, where
is Arthur in 1910? But most importantly this birth record was filed in 1942 with both a
Nellie Ward and Thomas T. BIshop as the "witnesses" for the information. There
was a Clyde Ward listed on the 1900 census in Texas and may have been in an aread near
where Nellie was living. I will have to track down that record again.
Unfortunately Nellie was a very private person. I was the one who uncovered that Nellie
and Stanley had in fact adopted two daughters after they married. The two young women
always called her Mrs. Ward and never mom. In fact my own mother didn't realize they
were her "aunts" until I told her. They were never introduced as part of the
children. When mom called them to talk about it, they confirmed that they were in fact
Stanley and Nellie's adopted children. So who knows if we will ever find out the true
story surrounding Arthur's father.
Any suggestions where else I can look?
Thanks again.
