(Montgomery Co. is due north of Vanderburgh by quite some distance. It's farther
north than Indianapolis and on the western side of Indiana.) I found her in the census in
1880 as Mary Hicks, daughter of Preston and Martha Hicks. They are living in Montgomery
Co. My guess is that at some point, your James A. was in Montgomery Co. and that they met
there.
I can only find James and Mary Ann in 1900 and 1910 and they are living in Pueblo, CO. It
states that he was born in KY and his parents were born in VA. It gives his birth date as
Jan. 1860. He and Mary Ann had been married 17 years at the time of the census. They
only have one daughter named Pearl C., who was born in KS so there may be no descendants
in IN. In the 1910 census it states that he was born about 1853. In the 1860 census,
there is an Alexander age 7 and a Franklin, age 8, whose parents were John and Mary.
However, it states that most of family was born in NC. It might be a mistake since that
commonly happened. This was in Floyd Co., KY and lists the following siblings (besides
Franklin), George, Rolie, William, Margarette,Charlotte and Julie Ann. Is this your James
Alexander?
In 1870, their father is dead and both Franklin and Alexander are living with mother Mary
and their siblings. Charlotte is now called Lotta and another sibling, Nancy is 7 yrs
old. They are living in Menifree, KY. In 1880 Pollie (a nickname for Mary) is living
alone in Menifree, KY.
BINGO! I just someone in Montgomery Co. in 1880. I think this is James A.

I looked at the actual image and it has write-overs, but appears to read Poplin to me. I
can find no evidence that James was in Vanderburgh Co. at all.
If you want complete transcripts of all of these census records, let me know and I'll
do that for you.
