How can I find out about my Great Grandfather's
plumbing company? And maybe find something
out about him in the process.
John R. Capps owned a plumbing company
listed in the city directory of Evansville from
1892 to 1893. The name of the company was
Capps and Newman at 417 Upper 3rd. It was
owned by John and a man named Walter N. Newman.
In 1894 it is listed just as Capps Plumbing
and the address is listed at 404 Upper 3rd.
In 1895 - 1896 it is listed as Capps and
Schaefer and the address is listed at 404
Upper 3rd. It is owned by John and a man named
John A Schaefer.
In 1897 only John Capps is listed at 404 Upper 3rd.
Interesting Walter Newman has his own company at
326 Upper 3rd.
I have him and his family in the 1900 census in
St. Louis Mo living with his brother-in-law John
R. Regan. (Ragen and also Ragon)
Were do I begin?

Nancy:
I believe that a descendant of Walter Newman, Harry Newman, married my
father's greataunt, Brent Newman. I always thought Newman Plumbing began with
Harry. My father remembers them as "well to do," very affluent even in the
1920s
and 30s. It is reasonable to assume that he did not build the business by
scratch but inherited it from him father. Harry and Brent had an only child who
took over the business. I will see what else I can find on Harry. Perhaps that
would lend some clues for you.
