'Electroplater' had asked:
-------------------------------
If you have a chance could you look up some random Black Deaths (Afro-American) in the newspapers in the 1930's - 1940s? Try several months apart. They are usually listed separately from the normal obit listings, I don't know when the paper started or stopped doing that. Make notes of the name, age and date of death.
I'd like to see if they show up in the Browning obituary index that is online. Once I noticed that some obituaries for blacks were not listed in the Browning website. This was for one week in the 40's. When I'm down at Willard Library, I always forget to check into this further. I'd like to see if it was a fluke or if he didn't index any blacks at all during that time period.
Thanks!
-------------------------------
Well, I traveled to a library on Tuesday to do some Evansville lookups, with really just enough time to find the specific bits that I was looking for, so the randomness involved in finding Af.A. deaths was just whatever I happened to see when going for those items from 1930-1950. And, I spotted two in the Courier of Wednesday, December 13, 1944. By the wording of your request, it was implied (or I've implied from it, so to speak) that the person need not have been a 'guest' of a Browning funeral home to have made the Browning database as it stands today. Also, I've no idea whether the Brownings had more than one funeral home location. Anyhow, the two obits appear as follows:
Negro Deaths
SAM FORT
Funeral services for Sam Fort, 68, Negro, 403 Bellemeade avenue, will be held at 1 o'clock this afternoon at the Thompson funeral home, Rev. H.O. McCutchin officiating.
JESS DANGERFIELD
Funeral services for Jess Dangerfield, 45, Negro, who died Monday, will be held at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Thompson funeral home, Rev. H.O. McCutchin officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
(end of listing)
In the next day's paper (12/14/1944) was a "Vital Statistics" straight listing of births and deaths, where causes of death are given. Dangerfield and Fort are together near the bottom of the list (the first two of the last five), and Dangerfield is the only one with a 'Negro' designation in the entire list that I can see. Knowing Sam's race, and seeing that he didn't receive the designation Jess received, I'll mention the last three here (actually, last five) just in case my assumption with the way the newspaper folks dealt with death/obit listings then holds true. As follows (note the different spelling of Sam's last name (typo?) and Dangerfield's address):
Jessie Dangerfield, 45, Negro, 607 East Cherry street, delirium tremens, Welborn hospital.
Sam Fiort (sic), 68, 403 Bellemeade avenue, carcinoma.
Margaret Alicia Martin, 50, 434 South Weinbach avenue, carcinoma, Deaconess hospital.
Thelma Pearl Retter (sic), 39, rural route 1, Newburgh, diabetes mellitus, Welborn hospital.
Jesse Smith, jr., infant, Shadywood Trailer camp, lobar pneumonia.
I'm also assuming some other bit of information (each) will crop up from somewhere else to shed light on the race of the final three, if at least just to supply more potential data for Electroplater.
Hope this helps!

I have over 23,000 burials in Locust Hill and pictures of all the tombstones (thru 2006). I have some microfilm-copied pages in my collections, each showing a particular obituary (or other bit) that's of interest to me. Well, other items have come along for the permanent ride, and I thought I'd offer those up for reference here on Rootsweb. Most are Mount Carmel, Illinois items.
Evansville Courier, Tuesday July 7, 1914
DIES OF INJURIES
-Youth Hops Freight Train and Has Leg Ground Off-
Mount Carmel, Ill., July 6.--- Oscar Schuster, 18 years old, son of John Schuster, died this morning from injuries received late Sunday night, when he fell under a freight train. The young man caught a passing freight train on the Southern railroad with the intention of riding to the next street crossing. At the Fifth street crossing he lost his hold and fell under the train. His left leg was crushed between the knee and hip. It was amputated, but he died this morning.
-Races on Labor Day-
It was announced by the racing association today that $1,000 will be offered in prizes to winners of automobile races to be held here on Labor day. This announcement was made following the success of a small racing meet held here July 4. Automobilists concede that the new race track in Mount Carmel is the best half mile track to be found in this part of the country.
-Old Citizen Dead-
Joseph Kieffer, for many years a farmer in this county and one of the oldest residents of Mount Carmel is dead here. He was 80 years old. He came to this county from Germany at the age of 19. For many years he resided at Haubstadt and was married there to Miss Kate Genter. He is survived by five sons and three daughters. The funeral will be held from the Catholic church here tomorrow morning.
W.A. Smith, one of the proprietors of the Hub clothing store narrowly escaped serious injury this morning while starting a fire in a gas heater. Gas had accumulated and an explosion resulted. The heater was wrecked.
-Blame Rose for Accident-
The police after investigating the accident at Eighth and Gum streets Sunday night in which G.A. Rickett's buggy was injured by being struck by Dr. W.S. Pritchett's automobile, are convinced that the blame for the accident rests upon Homer Rose, who ran into the doctor's machine forcing it into the buggy. Rose made a report at headquarters as required by law.
(also, a Country Club in Indianapolis was destroyed by fire on July 6. No specific names referenced.)
(although I didn't copy it - according to a note in the margin, there is a picture on this page of a Mrs. William G. Sharp.)
More bits as they are dug up!

JOHN LEROY RIGGS
Funeral services for John Leroy Riggs, 61, of 911 Pennsylvania street, who died Monday, will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Second Baptist church, Bowling Green, Ky., with Rev. Gardner Burden officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, Bowling Green. The body will be taken to the church from the Johann memorial temple here tomorrow morning.
CARL G. WALSH
Last rites for Carl G. Walsh, 45, of 1412 North Willow road, who died Sunday, will be held at 10 o'clock this morning at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Walsh, of 313 East Columbia street, with Rev. A.R. Swasko officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. The body is at the residence.
MRS. REBECCA IFTNER
, 86, died at 1 o'clock yesterday morning at the Rest Haven nursing home. She was a member of the Pleasant Chapel Baptist church. There are no known survivors. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the McCord and Boone memory chapel, with Rev. C.E. Fisher officiating.
MRS. SOPHIA A. GUMBEL
, 71, a nurse for 50 years, died at 9:20 o'clock last night at the Rest Haven nursing home. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Henry Schnepper, of Haubstadt; Mrs. George Laugel and Mrs. George Gruner, both of Evansville; two brothers, Alex and Linus [Genter], both of Evansville. The body is at the Ziemer funeral home.
(some known corrections to this obit: last name changed from Jenter to the correct Genter. Gumbel was Sophia's maiden name.)
(now, some truncated obituaries, done so much so that I'll just paraphrase)
A woman, the wife of John Schauss of Wadesville, died "last night" (Dec. 7) at a hospital. "She was a....Ladies Aid society....Evangelical church." Had either a brother or a son named Herman; "two sisters, the....d Lydia Schlundt,.....and one brother,..." Alexander personnel were in charge of the services.
----------------------------------------------
Mrs. Elizabeth M. Felker (age either 39, 59, 69 or 89), "of Pine Lawn,.....Saturday in St....be held at 7:30....morning at the....ome, continued at....Mary's Catholic....ial in St. Joseph...." St. Louis is clearly mentioned later in the obit, also a relative lived in Colorado. She had four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Looks as if she moved to St. Louis two years earlier, and looks as if her husband died in 1894.
----------------------------------------------
Miss Mary (Mayme) Poelhuis....(house number ending in 17) Judson street....funeral at Ziemer, was likely Dec. 9, 8:30 a.m....continued at a Catholic church, burial in St. Joseph cemetery.
----------------------------------------------
Roosevelt Land, 43, died likely at the residence of Mrs. R.L. Salyer, of Maryland street. Had something to do with the Craddock corporation, foundation or association. Survived by two brothers, both of Evansville. Day of funeral, funeral home and cemetery all danced around, but unseen.

Now, some other news bits:
WAR DAD TO BE HOSTS TO SOLDIERS CHRISTMAS
The War Dads organization and auxiliary last night moved to act as hosts and hostesses for soldiers Christmas day in the Y.W.C.A. The club will provide refreshments to all servicemen who visit the "Y" that day.
The War Dads were asked to act as hosts that day by Miss Grace Sansom, head of the armed force service office, Third and Vine streets, who spoke to the group last night.
MT. VERNON GETS REPORT ON RIVER
Mt. Vernon, Dec. 7--- Members of the Mt. Vernon common council discussed a government report on the Ohio river shore line today, but took no action. Mayor James A. Bennett said the office of the chief of engineers in the war department reported funds are not available to extend aid.
He has contended that bank caving and erosion are a threat to navigation and imperil oil shipping terminals located below the city. The report was given by the war department to Rep. Edward A. Mitchell, who turned it over to the Mt. Vernon council.
Mayor Bennett said today the city will continue to seek financial aid. Meanwhile, the engineers office will continue to "observe" the local situation, he said. The council set Dec. 20 as the deadline for receiving bids for the 1949 garbage collection contract.
INDUSTRIAL WASTE CAUSING WATER TASTE
Henderson, Ky., Dec. 7 --- Herman Hussel, water works superintendent, announced today that a peculiar taste in the city's water supply is not chlorine, but industrial waste from factory towns upstream. Mr. Hussel said Dr. Logan M. Weaver, county health officer, has reported the water entirely pure, however, and the bacterial count is normal.
No more chlorine is being added to the water than usual. The normal amount allows for a considerable margin of safety. Mr. Hussel said an increase in industrial waste is always evident about this time------------. (truncated)

Since I've introduced a couple of truncated divorce references, and since I've got a CD of Vanderburgh Co. divorces, I'll add some clarification.
One was for Clarence Smallwood; wife's name was Margaret. *She* had tried this some 13 years before, and it was dismissed on 6/10/1902. This is Superior Court, Book 30, Page 103.
This one in 1915 may not have officially gone through, since it wasn't recorded (or is incorrectly recorded, as following - or it really took that long).
Finally one was granted, with Clarence (again?) as plaintiff, on 06/20/1919. This is Circuit Court, Book M-2, Page 468.
An approx. 1-year-old son of the Smallwoods', named Chester, was mentioned in the 1915 article. There is the listing of another divorce, a Chester B. Smallwood as plaintiff, divorcing wife Alice, granted on 08/15/1935. This is Circuit Court, Book C-3, Page 272 (all of these according to the CD disk of divorces).
Another divorce involved the name of Mundy. This one is surely the same listed on the CD, where Georgia A. Mundy was plaintiff, agin husband Walter J., granted on 02/25/1916. This was Circuit Court, Book J-2, Page 196.
OK!

My RAYNOR and LINCOLN ancestors were both from New England (Long Island, NY
and MASS/VERMONT, respectively). However, sometime just after the Civil
War, Lewis LINCOLN and his daughter Lettie LINCOLN, along with Alonzo RAYNOR
(Lettie's soon to be husband) removed to Illinois.
For some reason, Lettie LINCOLN and Alonzao RAYNOR were married in
Evansville on September 10, 1865. I don't know if either family had
relatives in Evansville. By the 1970 census the family was living in
Jackson County, IL.
I don't know if there was a census taken in 1865 in Indiana, but I am
looking for the following:
Alonzo RAYNOR
b. 1843 in New York (parents b. in NY)
Lewis LINCOLN
b. 1814 in Massachusetts (parents b. in MASS)
Lettie LINCOLN or RAYNOR (father b. in MASS, mother b. in VT)
b. 1842 in Vermont
daughter of Lewis LINCOLN
wife of Alonzo RAYNOR - married in Evansville in 1865
Thanks for any help you can provide in this query.

-Coroner Kerney to Make Investigation--Youth Was Student at Business College-
Oscar Genter, age 17, 2805 Division street, died at 9 o'clock last night from concussion of the brain. He was struck in the head by a baseball while playing in a pick-up game Sunday afternoon. The accident was not thought to be serious at first but when his condition grew worse on the following day a physician was summoned. Genter was a student at Lockyear's business college.
He was playing in a baseball game on a Division street diamond near the intersection of Fares avenue. He had just came in from the field at the end of the third inning to await his batting turn. The pitcher made a wild throw to the first batter up. The ball went over the catcher's head and struck Genter, who was fifteen feet from the home plate with his back turned to the diamond.
He was dazed by the blow for a few minutes but after water had been dashed in his face by other players and he regained consciousness, he told his fellow players that he was not badly hurt and to go on with the game. He was taken home by a playmate.
The following day he complained of intense pains in his head and Dr. D.S. Goble was called. His condition was then found to be critical. He recognized and talked to members of the family but he was very low from then until his death.
He leaves his father, James Genter, two sisters and one brother. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic church. The funeral services will be held at the church Friday morning, but the time has not been set.
Coroner Neal Kerney was called when the youth died. He will make a thorough investigation of the case. Every member of the two ball teams will be summoned to testify in the inquest.

Mrs. Minnie Berger, 70, mother of John Berger, who died under mysterious circumstances at Princeton about two months ago, passed away at 1:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the home of her son, Walter Berger, 1507 Reis avenue. Pneumonia was the direct cause of the death.
Grief and worry over the death of her son hastened her end. The coroner of Gibson county returned a verdict of suicide in the death of John Berger, who carried large accidental life insurance policies, after an autopsy by the medical department of Indiana university revealed poison in the body. His death occurred a short time after he was injured in an automobile accident.

Now, some other news articles on the page:
Author to Speak Before Student Bodies of City
Dr. Winfield Scott Hall, famous American author, lecturer and authority on sex problems confronting modern youth, will speak before the student bodies of the public high schools, Evansville college, the Y.M.C.A. brotherhoods, and the local Rotary club, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, it was announced yesterday.
Dr. Hall will come to Evansville through the auspices of the boys' work committee of the Rotary club and will speak before the club at the regular noon luncheon Tuesday, Harold B. Brown, chairman of the committee, said yesterday.
No definite program has been arranged, but it is thought that Dr. Hall will lecture to all students of the high schools and the college. He will speak eight times daily, Mr. Brown said. Efforts will be made to have Dr. Hall speak also at the rural schools of the county during his visit, Brown declared.
KIWANIANS HEAR C. OF C. SPEAKER
The National Chamber of Commerce, composed of 800,000 business men, is intimately associated with the national government through its departments, and the international chamber was directly responsible for the Dawes plan, according to William Butterworth, vice president of the national Chamber, who spoke at the Kiwanis club luncheon yesterday.
While it may not be so directly felt, the work of the local Chamber of Commerce is intimately associated with that of the international Chamber, Butterworth pointed out, the development of the export trade by the Chamber having its benefits for the local market. John Van der Vries, also associated with the national Chamber, declared that the victory of that body in instituting the national budget at Washington, D.C., had proved a saving in each of the last three years of $250,000,000.
Butterworth stressed the importance of independence in business. "We must run business ourselves, and we must correct its evils without so much governmental intervention," he said. "We must also do our own housecleaning, as there surely must be some way of informing a man who isn't on the square."
Butterworth and his associates were introduced by Marcus Sonntag. A cornet solo by Robert Bruce, a visiting musician, was one of the features. The eleventh anniversary of Kiwanis international will be celebrated at next Thursday's meeting.

Thank you for the reply. To my knowledge, our Jung ancestor, August Jung, and his brother Herman left Indiana in the early 1870s.

Message Board Post:
Well, I will add this:
I will be going to another town in the next couple of weeks (about 175 miles round trip), where I can access microfilmed Evansville newspapers. This is assuming I cannot find what I want on NewspaperArchives.com at my local library. Even if I look up very little there, I want to go there since it's my alma mater town.
I will take requests for Evansville obituary lookups, but the *exact* month, year AND DAY of death or burial in Evansville or nearby must be known; this month/year stuff from the SSDI will not cut the mustard. I will take only a small number from each requester, and will probably cut off the grand total requests at 15-20 (see how it goes). For each mm/dd/yyyy request, I will skim the newspapers of that day, the next day, and the day after that (3 days total) until found. If not found on those three days, I will stop (failure for that one) and go on to the next request. If it's a burial date, I'll adjust my strategy accordingly. If this library doesn't have the microfilmed newspapers from the year of request, I will simply let you know (couldn't say now).
This request can also be for something other than an obituary (e.g., a birth announcement, significant court date/action, article telling of accident or death -- what print space was normally devoted to in a genealogical sense), as long as: it's a serious and sincere request -- a positive and complete month/day/year -- you're reasonably positive of the person's name, enough to me to recognize -- and its announcement falls on that day or the next two (see note above on burial dates).
Even if you think there's only an obituary, I'll be sure to skim for a related article. I'm accustomed to doing this, so I'm confident my skimming will be far better than the average person's (i.e., not likely to miss it if it's there).
I can assure you, whatever I come up with will be complete - not truncated (haha)!
Ask away, and let's hope I can withstand the potential clobbering... :) I'll keep whoever posted privately (at least, not on this thread unless it's a general update).
