I wanted to share with everyone a website I found that has Monroe County, Indiana genealogy info. They carry all the birth, marriage death, obituaries, military - you name it it's there. Although, when I emailed the webmaster they stated that this is a work in progress as they are transitioning from one company name to another, but a majority of the links are working.
www.ancestry-quest.com
I've been trying to track down my grandmother's family whose surname was CANTON. She was born in 1885 in Evansville Indiana and of course the 1890 census is gone. Appartnely around 1890-1892 there was a Tuberculosis epidemic and her parents died or at least her mother died. She was adopted about 1894 by a couple who didn't marry until that year. She was 8 years old at that time. The couple's name was William Henry Sterrett and Mary Eva Grismer. They did not live in Evansville so it is a mystery as to how they learned about the need in Evansville for adoptive parents. Clues my grandmother shared indicate that the adoption possibly was through the Episcopal church.
There are no birth records at the county offices at this point. They told my cousin that they had lost some records in transition to a newer facility. When our grandmother died they told us we could not have these records until she had been dead for 25 years. They told us don't have any information on adoptions or so they indicated through correspondence. They suggested we check through private adoptions through missionary or church organizations. I corresponded with the Episcopalian church offices in Evansville and although they acknowledged receipt of my request they have not answered further correspondence.
If someone could check the 1880 census records I would like to know if there are families listed in Evansville named CANTON or other spellings I have found since starting this investigation 30 years ago... KANTEN, KANTON, CANTIN, CANTAIN, KANTYN, CANTEYN or others similar. It might be probable that they are listed on the colored census... since my grandmother has contended that she was Cherokee Indian and the colored census is where many Indians might be found.
My grandmother was very fair skinned and could pass for white, the couple adopting her were white.
Thanks to anyone who offers to help out...
Leslie Thomas

Joshua was 31, estimated year of birth was 1851, father was John and mother was Polly Brown, source is book C-1, page 28. The est date of birth is the transcribers. Don

I find that there are some possible fathers for Charles in the 1880 census. They all reside in Gibson Co., but are nowhere to be found in the 1900 census, presumably dead. The names are:
Thomas
Nelson
Roman
Oscar
William/Wilhouse (The image looks like William to me)
It would be interesting if one could find death dates for the above names. It might help eliminate and/or pinpoint the most likely possibilities. I assume that you did a search in Gibson Co. for both Dyhouse and Dyehouse births. I notice that the spelling changed by the 1900 census. I live in OH so can't do personal look-ups for you. I can only research via computer. You might contact a volunteer at www.raogk.org and see if the Gibson Co. volunteer would research the death information for the above names or see if they might be able to find birth certificate information about Charles. It is not unusual for births to have gone unreported for that time period and that might be why there is no birth information for Charles. He probably obtained a later birth certificate via affidavit. I will send the image of the WWI registration privately. Maryjane
Have several photos from the family that are unmarked.
They look to be from the 1800's or early 1900's.
Does anyone know when the following studios were in
business? (All are in Evansville, IN unless otherwise
indicated):
Miller and Miller 1009 W. Franklin St.
Mitchell and Miller 820 or 830 W. Franklin St.
JW Tharling 222 Main St.
EB Overell Evansville
E. Popp 430-1/2 Main St.
Oscar Hammond Vincennes,IN
AJ Feay Corner of Main & 2nd.
Wm. Buell Evansville
Frank H. Hunton 606 Main St.
Sunbeam Gallery 421 Main St.
Favorite Galler Corner 3rd & Vine
Snapp and Isaacs Hatton Gallery Evansville
Called Willard Library and there doesn't seem to be
any written record for Evansville photographers. The
only other thing I can think of is to look for them
year by year in the early city directories.
Any clues?
Thanks,
Lisa Lutterbach

This is wonderful information!
Charles Dyhouse's parents died when he was a baby and was raised by the Michels. Because of this, I cannot seem to find any information on his birth parents. I have his social security application (copy) and he lists his foster father and mother and wrote that father's name unknown. This is where I'm going crazy!
I have seen him listed as born in 1888 and 1887 in Princeton, Indiana. That's where I seem to be at a dead end. Gibson County Health Dept/Court House says they don't have records from them on birth certificates...GRRR!
Any ideas where I can go?
I would LOVE a copy of of the WWI draft registraion - yes, his middle name is alexander.
Please email me at wells729(a)earthlink.net and I'll give you my mailing address - I will pay for any postage if you like!
thank you again for all your help! you are wonderful!

You could get a copy of the death certifivate from the county health department in Evansville (Vanderburgh Co.) or get a copy of the obituary from the Evansville Courier and Press. Browning Funeral Home is located in Evansville, not Henderson, KY. I grew up two blocks from there. Here's the address.

Dorothy. Not related. Closest I could come was a Joshua F Poplin married Dora Alexander in Spencer county, Ind on 24 Dec 1882, source is book 8, page 370. Don
Actually the census shows him as being 24 years old and being from Virginia. He also listed both his parents being from Virginia as well. The line above his says Kentucky. His occupation is listed as a Teamster. I am still looking for him still being in the area in 1900 or 1910.

I forgot to mention in my previous Poplin request that Franklin Poplin sometimes signed his name J.F. Poplin and may have used it for a marriage record or a census report. He was the son of John and Polly Brown Poplin who came to Ky from VA and NC back in the 1860's.

I am hoping someone can come through on this one-- I found a relative-- 60 yr old, widowed, female, living at the Guardian's Home in Pigeon Twp in 1930. Is this the same as the Poor Farm which was out by the Hamilton Golf Course (I think that is the golf course)-- it would be on the old Petersburg Road? Thanks so much.
