I've tried to search for David and/or Helen Hawkins in Vanderburgh Co., IN
in the 1860 census, but find no such record. What am I missing? I did
find this marriage and census information: If you want, I can send the
census image as a jpeg file to you privately. Let me know if you want it.

The son, Edward son of Mr. & Mrs. E. W. Wheeler, died in CA on 1/1/35 when
he was 27 yr. old. His aunt is listed as Lil Shriver and gave her address
at 524 Runnymeade in Evansville. Then I found that Mrs. Lillie Shriver
died on 1/15/61 at age 89. Her brother is listed as Leonard Adkins of
CA. Probably William and Gilbert died before she did. That makes me
certain that Lil's maiden name was Adkins. Elizabeth was her sister, her
name would be Adkins, not Snow.
Yes, I have very definitely researched this before. Elizabeth's maiden
name was Adkins, not Snow. She died on 11/18/47 in Downey, CA. It lists
her brothers, William, Leonard and Gilbert Adkins, all of CA. Her husband
was Edward W. (apparently she died first), daughters Mrs. George Terrell
and Mrs. Charles Henry. All but the sister, Lillie Shriver, lived in CA.

I think this is the death of Edward in CA. The 1900 census gave his birth
as May 5, 1866 and this says May 5,1865.. Those are common errors. I see

You can do a search at the following site. Use "Standard" search and enter

Hello,
Looking for the marriage date of Edward/Edwin/Edmond Wheeler born ca 1866,
married Elizabeth last name possibly Snow , married ca 1899. They were in
Vanderburgh in 1900 and 1910. Of course looking for any other information on
this couple. Any help would be appreciated.
Carol
Perhaps he died in Henderson, KY. Evansville is on one side of the Ohio
River and Henderson is on the other. The trip could have easily been made
in an hour in those days.
Do you have his family in the 1920 census. Here's where they're living.

There were coal mines in Daviess Co, (abuts Henderson Co. on the east.) but
I couldn't find evidence of any mine accidents that fit in with his death

So he was living in Owensboro (which is Daviess Co.) at the time of his
death. This surely made the newspapers. However, they aren't online. I
suggest that you find a volunteer in Daviess Co. to search that date for a
mine accident. Because it was death by accident, it might not have been
possible to embalm him and they interred his body ASAP. Go to the site
below to find a free volunteer or go to the Rootsweb site for Daviess County.

Is anyone able to do an obit look-up? I'm not sure if one is even in existence. I'm looking for my ggrandfather. His name was Thomas or Tom Clements. On his death certificate, it states he died in KY on July 22, 1921. It also states he was buried in Evansville, Indiana on July 23, 1921. (Was that kind of fast transport even available then?) Anyway, his wife was Effie Lou or Lou Effie May, and they had five children-Flossie, Myrtle, William, Alma and Lillard. (Don't ask.) Thank you!
Hi Candy,
Thank you for your response on my posting about my
Great Grandfather.
I would appreciate anything you might find about the
company.
Something must have happened between them for
my G grandpa to up and leave Evansville at the turn
of the century.
His children were all baptized at Assumption Catholic
Catherdral and his wife Elizabeth Regan Capps (1916)
and daughter Susan (1914) were buried at St Joseph's
Cemetery in the Michael Regan (Ragon/Ragen) family
plot.
Up to at least 1916 they still associated with Evansville.
One of these days I will make a trip to Evansville and visit
the Willard library and St. Joseph Cemetery.
Thanks.
Nancy

Yes, it has lots of photos but somewhat limited amount of history. He had another one "An Evansville Album" it also has lots of photos with a smidgen more history.
The Tri-State Genealogy Society reprinted "History of Evansville and Vanderburg County, Indiana" by Frank M. Gilbert, 1910. They sell it for $55 though. Its a nice book with quite a bit of early history.
What I didn't like about the first edition of "The Bend in the River" was the later chapters from 1920 on seemed more like a recitation of the newspaper headlines. It was rather bland., no drama :-) didn't expand too much on why events happened.
I haven't looked through the updated edition.
I don't know if you've seen the Postcards and Photos that Willard has put online recently.
