Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Some info may not be yours and you may have the rest, but thought that I
would send it along anyway.
The first wife? Probably not since he would have only been 16; although,
possible.

I am friends with Kim Smith who is the the daughter of Bill and Charolett Harter Smith. When Bill died she had asked me to do this for her but i couldn't get anywhere because all she remembered of Hilary and Melissa was that they were buried in Evansville. and that Hilary died in 1949. she said one of her aunts had started some work on it but I can't remember which one for sure. the only thing i have found out for sure so far is that Hilary was born in 1872 supposedly in Gibson co. Ind. but i can't find anything on him there. In 1880 he was in warrick co. with his parents W.M. Smith and Matilda Bryant. He and Melissa Holt were married in 1897 in warrick co. and still living in warrick co. in 1930 census. They must have moved to Evansville right after that census was taken. Birth records did list a male child born in 1906 but no name. it gave two dates Aug 1 1906 and Aug 26 1906 and i am wondering if the second was maybe a death date. ?
The death records list her as having been born about 1871 in KY but the 1930 census said Indiana. I have not found her so far in Indiana in 1870/1880 under the name melissa. maybe i ought to try a different spelling. As i said Kim asked me to do this in 1997 or there after but i had not had any success until ancestry.com and all the co. websites opened up. I would look forward to anything you might share and I will share anything i find also. Sue

Yes, my Hilary Smith married Melissa Holt. I am curious as to who is also researching this line. My aunts and uncles that live in Evansville have never shown any interest in researching our family. I do know that both of my great grandparents are buried in Oak Hill Cemetary in Evansville. I do not live there any more so I do not know if there are headstones or not. They were both classified as being "welfare" on the burial cards. Family stories are that Melissa also spelled as Malissa was of Cherokee lineage. I have not been able to find out if she was ever listed on the Indian Rolls. I would be interested in anything you may have on either of them. Unfortunately, I am estranged from that side of the family. Thanks in advance. Becky

Hilary & Melissa are buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.
Melissa was in the Browning obits listed as Miss Mazie Smith age 82. She died at St Mary's Hospital in Evansville and had lived at the Little Sisters of the Poor, in Evansville for 32 years before her death. There were no survivors according to the obit.

Well, your actually probably not going to believe this but I was just flipping thru websites looking for anything that might have to do with Vanderburg co. and hit this one that listed people who died in Indiana. it was listed in ABC order so i hit the name Smith and it listed a whole list of Smiths. I didn't find anything the first time because I was looking for ABC order there also. But then I noticed that some of the names were out of order so I went back and found Hilary Smith listed and Melissa Smith also. My Friend told me that she remembered they were buried in Evansville, and that they had it written down that he died in 1949 but that was it. Not the Cemetary or anything. it also had her parents listed William Smith and Charlotte Smith. Someone sent me an message that his parents were Henry and Matilda Bryant Smith. I found them on the 1880 census for Warrick co. under H.M. and Matilda Smith. Son Lemuel H. Smith 8 years of age. But my Friends Aunt said H!
ilary was born in Gibson co. Ind but i could not find that either. It has the date of death for Hilary as jun 2, 1949 and 77 years of age and Married. And for Melissa it had jul 11, 1972 82 years of age widow. It also said something about Hilary dying on something like Welfare or the County? I can't remember now. But that was it. I can't even tell you if i could find that page again. it was pure luck. Sorry Sue

My Aunt's maiden name is Margaret Mary Brockriede. Am looking for info about her family. Most lived in Vanderburgh County, Indiana. Will share info that I have with you.
According to the book "An Evansville Album" by Darrel E. Bigham, the
terms "upper" and "lower" were used in reference to the parts of the
streets upriver and downriver of Division street, respectively, until
1929. The ["lower" region] was distinctive for its saloons,
boardinghouses, and brothels." (pg 19)
There is no direct reference to Upper Sixth in the book, but there is
a reference to "lower fourth between Vine and Sycamore", so the
"upper" and "lower" description extended at least that far north.
Several of Dr. Bigham's pictures of old Evansville are at:

Hi Linda, I just saw your postings about the Vincent genealogy you had all the way back to 1700. I too am a Vincent from Muhlenberg County Ky. I am also researching my family. MY father was Robert son of Thomas Vincent and Mary Holliman and grandson of John Vincent. Does this sound familiar to you. If please email me at: DPWeinzapfel(a)aol.com. Would love to know if you have any photos of anyone in my line. Thanks, Shirley

If you ever wanted a picture of any of the schools your ancestors attended, this may be your chance. I just added a page of over 2,000 images of various schools from all over the U.S.
The page is hosted by www.family-images.com at WWW.Family-Images.Com and just click on the Miscellaneous Schools Page.
Please note that there is no real order to the listing so you will have to use the "Search and Find" Options of your browser or just plain or browse the listings to find schools of interest to you. I am looking for some volunteers to rename the images so I can better organize them but I have so many images to get online, I can't take the time to rename them all myself. I figure it is better to get the images online where people can find them.
If you have something not listed or a better or different view of a school or anything else, feel free to share it with our visitors. I have tens of thousands of images to get online but am always happy to add anything you think the visitors might like.
I have over 1,000 church images to add if I can ever get to scanning them all.
I would also like some feedback on what genealogists want images of. For instance, what images would you like to add to your family history scrapbook? I assume anything relating to your ancestors, and the towns they lived in, but would you want to have an image of the school or church they attended? Are you looking for pictures of where they were employed, where they may have spent days off with the family like amusement parks, lakes, etc.? Do you want to see images of towns or buildings after disasters, etc. to see what the people had to overcome to get on with their lives? What kind of images are important to your family history scrapbooks? Maybe I will make up a poll and post it on the site to collect your responses.
Please visit this collection and I hope you find something of interest. Feel free to spread this link around.
Mike
does anyone know what the initials "HPB" mean when they are used beside a surviving member of a dead person on the Browning site? Thanks. helen Zuber Keusch
