A suggestion-- email Lyn at Willard Library, she is on their website. She might just look up info on the flood at give you the correct info. My father was a mail carrier at that time and I have a picture of him, standing in the flood waters on John Street in Eville by his jon boat, delivering the mail.
I guess the PO somehow got boats and issued them to their carriers. At that time, full uniforms were worn, and dad has his wading boots on and uniform and is delivering the mail. He said the mail went through to the places it could be delivered, and where they could row to or walk if it wasn't too deep. Of course, the people still in their houses were glad to see the mailman come.
Also, I am trying to find a lost wedding picture of my g grandfather, Jacob Zuber who married Christina Bangert. This was a double wedding at Holy Trinity, July 2, 1857; Christina's sister, Anna Barbara Bangert, married Karl Herman on that same date and according to my family history there is a picture of the double wedding in the Herman family. Thanks for any help on this.

My Aunt kept a Scrap Book of "The Evansville Courier," clippings from Jan. 21 to Feb 7th 1937. In a related article on Febraury 7th, the following: "RELIEF HAMPERED - Rain and snow hampered relief work in Evansville as the water swept over the lower part of the city, where scores of families on Friday and Saturday, January 22 and 23, were forced to evacuate......" (no page reference noted.) In another article on January 21,under heading, "Homes Deserted earlier; Crews at Bridge Quit,...... About a dozen families were moved from outer Covert avenue and Villa Sites districts, according to Frank Fickas, Knight Township Trustee." My parents lived at 1680 So. Elliott Street, south of Riverside Drive, and they moved all the furniture out of the house as the water lapped up against the first step at the front porch. I celebrated my second birthday on January 23, 1937.Of course, I remember nothing about the flood. If you desire a copy of the summary article, or other, please advi!

Diane,
I'm sorry to say that I do not have a George Fischer in my family tree. My Fischer ancestors came from Meisterschwanden, Switzerland to The States in 1867 and located in Kansas. Ten years later, after the grasshopper epidemic, they eventually settled in Tell City. Fischer is a very common name in Switzerland and many Swiss did settle in the Tell City area.
There was a Swiss genealogist named Julius Billeter that published his work around 1900. The LDS have much of this on microfilm. I ordered the film that pertained to Meisterschwanden and was quickly able to find my ancestors and trace them back to the 1500's. A word of caution with Billeter's work though...supposedly it is not completely accurate and you need to be a bit careful using it. However, I will say that the family names and dates I had passed down to me, matched up exactly with his work and it was a big help to me.
I am sorry I can't be of more help, but I wish you luck with your research. ~Cindy

George and Catherine Fischer's two babies are buried in the Fischer/Porter plot in Greenwood Cemetary inTell City, IN. They were buried in 1864. In the 1860 Census, George is listed as 40 yrs. old and from Switzerland and Catherine is 38, also from Switzerland. Also in this plot are my gggrandfather, Peter Porter and his wife. I feel that the two families must be related to have purchased a cemetary plot together.
I wonder if your Fischers immigrated to Tell City, IN because they were related to the George Fischers who were already there. Please let me know if there is a George in your Fischer family genealogy.

It confirms the date of 31 January 1937 as being the crest. I also know that martial law was declared some days earlier. I will try to hit the library tomorrow to find the exact span for that.
Also, and I will probably appear to be both somewhat cynical and chauvinistic, but I have found that historical things written in Indy about southwest Indiana are often times suspect.

Hello again! I knew I had a reason for joining the Vanderburgh Co list
other than sending the wrong email to you :). Hello to all the other lists
as well. I am looking for Viehe, Milbratz, Holtman and Pieper descendants
who may want me to make copies of some old photos for them - I would have to
ask for copying costs and shipping expenses. Here is who I have:
1 photo with Charlotte Milbratz, Mrs. Helen Holtman, Mr. William F. Viehe,
Louise Viehe (wife of William), and Mrs. Sarah Ellen McNabb Viehe (wife of
John H. Viehe) taken in 1934 in Evansville, Indiana.
1 photo of Helen Holtman, John H. Viehe, and Sarah Ellen McNabb Viehe - no
date nor location given
1 photo of Evansville, Indiana 1914 - John E. Viehe and Dog Jim, Dr. Robert
W. Viehe, Aunt Lou Viehe (Mrs. William F), Lucile Viehe (Mrs. John E),
Lucile Viehe and Uncle Billy Viehe (Williiam F).
2 photos of Walter Milbratz and Lucile Viehe Failing taken in 1918 after
Walter just arrived home from WWI
1 photo of Dora Pieper Freed, Sarah Ellen McNabb Viehe, and Louise Viehe
Pieper
1 photo of the Pieper Family taken in 1934, the occasion being Dora's
graduation from Indiana State University. No names given below photo but I
recognize of course Dora Pieper, Sarah Ellen McNabb Viehe and Louise Viehe
Pieper. 5 other individuals unnamed
1 studio photo of William Frederick Viehe (no date, but he looks
approximately in his 40s or 50s)
1 studio photo of Louise Viehe, wife of William Frederick (once again no
date, looks 40s or 50s)
1 studio photo of Robert W. Viehe - early teens
1 studio photo of John E. Viehe - early teens
1 studio photo of unidentified Viehe - late teens or early 20s (taken by
S.W. Douglas) - note, this may be Robert W. Viehe - they look a bit similar
Ok, it is Robert W. I can tell by the next picture I have :)
1 studio photo of Dr. Carl Viehe and Dr. Robert W. Viehe (Carl looks 30s,
Robert looks 20s)
1 studio photo of Dr. Robert W. Viehe (looks 20s or 30s)
1 studio photo of Anna Viehe (Mrs. Hiram Brown) taken in 1908 by G.L. Louis?
1 studio photo of Ella Viehe (Mrs. Markham Frederick) - no date, taken by
Sutuhuhng? She is wearing a nurses uniform
Ok, that's what I have. Here's the little info I have on these individuals:
1. John H. Viehe was born around 1862 in Indiana and moved to Pike County,
IN where he married Sarah Ellen McNabb. They only had one daughter Lucile
Viehe, who eventually married a Charles Krieg Failing. By 1910 the family
had moved to Terre Haute, Vigo County, IN.
2. William Frederick was born MAY 1857 in Indiana and lived in Evansville,
his wife Louise was born MAY 1862 in Indiana. They had two sons on the 1900
census - Robert W (b.JUL 1884 - probably the same as Dr. Robert W Viehe I
have pictures of above) and John B (b.MAR 1886 - probably the same person as
John E). In the 1900 census William Frederick was a Commercial Traveling
Grocer. In 1870 he and his sister Charlotte were not living with their
parents, but in Vigo Township, Knox County in the home of Frederic and Minni
Stelting. I have not found their parents anywhere in Vanderburgh Co or Knox
Co in 1870 census. There was a 6 month old Charles Viehe in the 1870 census
living with August and Mary Sager in Widner Township, Knox County (very near
another family of Steltings). It appears there must have been an emergency
or family disaster which caused the children to be spread to other
families - Charlotte is still living with this family in 1880! And Charles
is living with his aunt and uncle Frederick Berkemier and Caroline Viehe
Berkemier (born Prussia around 1840 according to the census) and his
grandfather Henry Viehe (born around 1803 in Prussia) in 1880. In 1880
William Frederick himself was living with Fred W. Viehe (his uncle) in
Vincennes, Knox County. In 1910 this family (William Frederick, wife and
children) was living at 420 Washington Avenue.
3. Charlotte Viehe, appears to have been the sister of William Frederick -
obviously married a Milbratz (as we see the first photo contains a Charlotte
Milbratz.) I'm also assuming Walter Milbratz therefore is her son.
Haven't found much on this family.
4. Louise Viehe Pieper appears to be a cousin or niece, rather than a sister
to John H Viehe, Here her, her children and her father are in the 1920
Census - Vigo TWP, Knox County, Indiana:
Charles Viehe, head, 71, married (?), born in Indiana, parents born in
Germany, farmer
Louisa Piper, daughter, 42, widowed, born in Indiana
Ellsia, granddaughter, ?, Indiana
Charles, grandson, 10, IN
Elmer, grandson, 9, IN
Clara, granddaughter, 7, IN
Dora (here's our Dora), granddaughter, 5, IN
5. It appears Charles (the younger, b. around 1870) may have moved to
Tennessee as I find a Chas F Viehe, right age, born in Indiana, in the 1920
census in Tennessee. Need more confirmation to say for sure.
6. I have found Anne Viehe (picture of her included) in rootsweb.com
databases. She lived most of her life in Missouri. Please go to
rootsweb.com for the obit, death date, marriage info, and info on her
husband and his ancestry. Her parentage is a bit confusing to fit into the
puzzle as it says Mr and Mrs Henry Viehe in the obit - but John Henry didn't
have Anne, I know that for sure. Who is this other Henry?
7. Mrs. Helen Holtman is Helena Viehe who married Henry Holtman. She was
said to have been born in Germany in 1860.
This is all I have so far, I haven't had a chance to check Ancestry.com -
only FamilySearch, HeritageQuest and Rootsweb. I'm sorry for how messy and
long this message is. I have not been able to figure out how my John H.
Viehe is connected to William F, Charlotte and Charles (the younger) yet. I
know he is, this is why I have these pictures - he married a McNabb. Is
Charles (the older) an older brother of William F? I've also found other
Viehe's in the Knox County area that I am sure are somehow related, but
haven't figured out how yet. One good piece of news is that I now know the
place the family came from in Germany - atleast I think. If anyone has any
info to add about the Viehe's, please do let me know. I hope someone may
find this helpful or that I can find descendants of any of these people I
have in photo.

Hi Cousin,
I want to thank you for the information that you sent me yesterday, unfortunately, it did not quite answer the question that I have. I had already seen that information and it gives me a timeframe of 18 January to 24 January which is a help, but, I would like to refine that to the actual date. I am attempting to write up a sort of manuscript of my life of the things that I have seen or done. I can remember standing on a sidewalk which I believe was in front of the house that we lived in and looking in both directions and seeing parts of Evansville flooded.
I hope that your Genealogy is progressing well. I have been too busy on other projects to devote much time to mine so far this year. We are going to attempt to make a trip back to Evansville next year, so, maybe I will pick something up then.
Have a great day.

I want to thank you Steve for your the information, but, I am still confused as to the date of the flood because in the Lilly Library at the University of Indiana in Bloomington, Indiana there is a book "Work Relief Under John K. Jennings, 1931-1939" and in Chapter 3 which is about "The Ohio River Flood" and the WPA. In this chapter of the book it tells about the effects of the flood on Evansville and it states, "On January 24 martial law was clamped down on Evansville. On that day the river stage reached 54 feet -- far above the 1913 level."
I do not know which account of the flood is correct. Thank you again.

According to McCutchan's "At the Bend of the River: The Story of Evansville" 1982, the 1937 Flood crested at Evansville on Sunday morning 31 January 1937 at 53.74 feet. It held this level for 36 hours before beginning to recede. This eclipsed the previous record flood of 1913 when the river reached a crest of 48.45 feet. The '37 flood inundated approximately 500 city blocks (of the then city), all of Union Township. 7500 homes were severely damaged.

He died some time in or before 1875 because Mandala's last name in 1880 is Usery and she has a 4 year old daughter named Ettie. I am seeking information about where my children's ggg grandfather Robert F.
Nightingale is buried. He came to Evansville in 1832 from England and lived
there with his wife Mary Anne raising 10 children. He apparently fought in
the Civil War though he was 60 and died June 11, 1865.
The family bible lists him as dieing in Princeton which I believe to be part
of Evansville.
I would like to learn which cemetery he is buried in and how I may contact
them for further information.
Any assistance in this matter would be much appreciated.
