Killed Himself
Rudolph STEINEKER, of Evansville, Ind., concluded last Sunday morning to do a lot of blowing up. He secured six kegs of giant powder, carried this into two houses that he had deeded to his children, attached a fuse to the same, set it on fire, went to a stable loft and when the explosion followed he blew out his brains with a pistol. It was thought that STEINEKER was insane. (Source: Madisonville (Ky.) Hustler, Fri., Jan. 24, 1896)

Died Suddenly
On last Friday, Mr. Leopold WOOLFF, of Princeton, a prominent merchant, died very suddenly. He was about 45 years old and had been in business for the past twenty-five years, had built up a fine trade and had accumulated a good competency. We understand that he had his life insured for a large sum. He was a son-in-law of Mr. S. ROSER, of this place. In answer to a telegram announcing the death, Mr. ROSER and family went to attend the funeral. The interment took place at Evansville last Sunday. (Source: Madisonville (Ky.) I recently came across a picture with the notation of Joseph Brauch college picture. It pictures about 15 young people with 3 men who appear to be teachers. Was there a college in Evansville, or a Business School, in the 1890s in Evansville. Joseph came from a very poor family, and I can't imagine that he would have gone very far away to college. I tried Evansville College and they were kind enough to do an alumni lookup for me, but no Joseph Brauch. Any suggestions?

I was confused by a listing in the 1910 census records listing my great great grandfather as a surgeon. I knew he was a rabbi, but thought this was a mistake. Last week I had an opportunity to review some city directories in the Chicago area and found that Abel Lane listed himself as both! He was an Allopath - which sounds like he did such things as "bleed" people and other unconventionally medical treatments. He had a son named Myron E. Lane who was an MD and graduated from the University of Ill.Chicago. Thanks to the reader who sent me on the trail of this research. A little new information is much better than not moving forward at all.
I am new to this list, but have been researching the Schnake/Schnacke
surname (My wife is a Schnake) since the 1950s. The Schnake/Schnackes of
Kreis Minden, Westfalen, settled in two major localities in the
US--Washington County, Illinois, and Vanderburgh County, Illinois. My
wife's ancestor settled in Illinois; his brother, Fred Schnake, settled in
or near Evansville and founded the Schnake pump company there, now
Schnake-Grasson on the web. Some of the Evansville family spelled it
Schnacke, with two c's.
I have a web site with the fascinating history of this family, at
http://freepgages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~schnake, with pictures of the Old
Country and a book on the history of the family and name, The Story Of
Schnake, which is clickable from the main page. The Story of Schnake has a
lot of general history and the history of the locality.
Right now, I am specifically trying to track down two Schnakes, both named
Louise, one born 1Feb. 1806, the other born 1 Nov.1843, sister and aunt of
my wife's ancestor, who came to the US with him in 1857, and we don't know
where they went after that. They could have joined the Schnakes in the
Evansville area.
If anyone can help, I would be interested.

You people from Evansville have been so helpful in the past, I have another favor to ask. I recently discovered my gt uncle, Joseph F. Brauch died by drowning supposedly in the Ohio River 27 July 1898. I have looked at the Browning Obits and Newspaper articles and have found no reference. Would the Willard Library do a lookup for me?
Also, I came across a class picture of Joseph, with about 14 other students. The note on the back says Joe's college picture. It shows 15 students and what looks like 3 teachers. If it is indeed a college picture, it would be about 1895/96 as Joseph was 24 when he drowned. What college could this be in Evansville, or possible what High School?
Thanks again for any help out there.
