Thank you Chris, that is interesting. I had known some of it, but not that coming in to New Orleans was the least expensive. What a hardship that must have been, coming any way. Wonder how long it took?
Thanks again.

My wife wrote this short note to herself while researching the same question...it was for Knox County, but that's near E'ville.
"Three routes brought German immigrants to Indiana: (1) by landing at New York and continuing by way of the Great Lakes and the canals, (2) by landing at Baltimore and traveling overland by wagon for 2 weeks to Wheeling, West Virginia, then by boat down the Ohio River, and (3) by way of the Mississippi River. The second route was the safest, also the most expensive. The first route was so hazardous that Lake Erie was called the German graveyard. The voyage by way of the Mississippi River was also hazardous. The paddle boats had to go upstream and some of the boilers overheated and exploded, the boats burned, and the loss of life and possessions was heavy. Some boats sank, some were caught on sand bars and jetties. However, almost all of the immigrants came this way. It cost about half as much to come by way of New Orleans as by way of the Great Lakes. Most Knox County settlers came via the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, then by wagon from Evansville." HTH

I know this is very old, but I hope this may provide a clue for you. I just found the immigration record for my Gt Gt Aunt, Maria Feldhaus who married Gerhard Joseph Plohg/Plock/Ploch in 1860 in Evansville. Gerhard's mother was a Margaret Wolf. What is interesting is the the name next to Maria's in the immigration record is a Margaret Wolff age 21. Could this be your Margaret Wolff? They both were listed as Farmers and coming from Hannover. Neither were traveling with their parents. Ship name: Sirius, sailed from Bremen to New Orleans with the destination listed as Cinncinati. Landed 20 Nov 1858.
I have seen many Wolf records in the Catholic Church records in Evansville, but at the time, I did not know of a connection to my Feldhaus or Plohg.
Hope this reaches you.

I hope this is not too late. Anyway, the only thing I have on the Wolff/Wolf family is that my GtGt Uncle Gerhard Joseph Plohg/Ploch/Plock's mother was Margaret Wolf, who married Theodore Plohg. I also saw in the immigration records that my GtGt aunt, Maria Feldhaus immigrated here in Nov. 18 1858. She was 22 and the person next to her in the immigration list was Margaret Wolff age 21. They came from Hannover. I believe the Wolff, Plohg and Feldhaus families knew each other in Hannover and immigrated together. In doing my Felthaus research, I did see many Wolf records in the Catholic Churches in Evansville, but at the time I did not know the connection.
Just a clue --- maybe.

Hi all you good people have been so generous with your time to answer my many questions. I have another question for you. I just discovered that my gtgt aunt, Maria Feldhaus Plohg, landed in New Orleans Nov. 22 1858 with a destination of Cinncinati. She stopped at Evansville. My question is: How would you travel from New Orleans to Evansville in fall/winter 1858 and how long would it take? I would think possible by steamship, but does the Ohio River freeze over? I am from Detroit, and the Detroit River usually freezes over and I wondered if the Ohio does also? How long would such a journey take? I would think that many of the German immigrants in Evansville came this route.
Thank you again for all your help.

Can anyone recall the first and last name (and correct spelling) of the
kindergarten teacher at Henry Reis in Evansville about 1949? I know their
last names-- Mrs. Heiman and Mrs. Trusty. I assume they were married, but
they may not have been as we always called every lady "Miss". Hieman was
pronounced "HI-man" and I am not certain on the spelling. Thanks.

Can you look through your info for the Kessler family and see if you can find anything using the following?:
In 1910, Herman Beiser and his wife Lena Kessler (b. 1887) lived in NYC with their children and Lena's widowed mother, Mary Stahl Kessler(b.NYC 1860s and identified as "mother-in-law" to Herman). Also listed on the census as living with them is a "Sarah", 15, identified as "sister-in-law". No last name is given. I'm assuming that Sarah is Lena's sister and not Herman's brother's wife (by her age, since I doubt she could be married at 15 to Herman's brother and we have no record of Herman's siblings so I'm not even sure he had a brother.) So I'm assuming she is "Sarah Kessler" at that point. I have no record of whatever became of her. I'm wondering if she moved away from New York and, if so, she could have married and we're missing her because we're so focussed on NY geneaology traces. If you have something on a maiden Sarah Kessler, please let me know.
Thankfully,

Will Be Buried This Morning
The remains of Fred P. JOHNSON, of Evansville, were brought to Madisonville yesterday and will be interred at Odd Fellow's cemetery this morning. Mr. JOHNSON was at one time a citizen of Hopkins county, he having lived both at this place and at Earlington. Several years since, he lost a leg in an accident while in the employ of the railroad. For some time he has lived at Evansville where he had the position as switchman. He was taken with consumption some time since and it was from this that he died. He carried an insurance in the Knights of Honor Lodge for the benefit of his wife, who survives him.
The remains were accompanied by his wife and by Mr. R.M. NICKELS, who came as a representative of the Knights of Honor. The funeral services will be conducted this morning at 9 o'clock at the residence of Mrs. George SIMONS, by the Rev. J.C. HOPEWELL, after which the remains will be taken to the cemetery for interment. The members of the Hopkins Lodge Knights of Honor are requested to meet at the lodge room promptly at 8 o'clock to take part in the funeral exercises. (Source: Madisonville (Ky.) I was wondering, is the 1870 Vanderburgh Co., IN, census complete? While
I was visiting Willard (about 3 yrs ago), the 1870 indexed book was not
complete-- so they said. I was looking for my great grandfather, Jacob
Zuber, born about 1832 in France. He would have had a wife, Christina--b.
1837 in Germany (or perhaps Guistine-- if the census taker didn't write
well, have seen the name spelled both ways). Four living children would be
listed with them-- Louisa (1860), Maria Anna "Anna" 1862, Frank 1864,
Maria Magdalena "Lena" 1868. Children b. in IN. This was one of those
families where the girls were given the first name of Maria and went by the
second name. Also in the hh would be a brother of Jacob, Anton/Antone b.
1819 in France. In 1860 the family lived north of Evansville in the
Darmstadt area. Christina is buried at St. Joseph Church Cem in St.
Joseph, IN, as are some of the children. By 1880 Jacob was widowed and
left the area for Wabash Co., IL, where he had a brother (Frank) and a
sister (Louisa Zuber Stecker) living. Thanks for any help with this.

I have a letter that states that Matilda Miller Paine Stinson (Or Matilda
Paine Miller Stinson) had a portrait that hung in her home in the 1850's.
Does anyone know anything about this portrait? I would love to find a copy
of it for my records. I have been researching Stinson genealogy since the
mid 1960's and have a lot of information to share and would like to add
anyone one else's information to it. I have it online at

Thank you for any information you can help with.

The Historic Atlas of Indiana series may be an invaluable aid to Genealogists, Historians and researchers in search of 19th century Indiana places. Each Atlas CD consists of a series of 8 or 9 bordering counties making up 1 of 11 Zones that depict all 92 Indiana counties. Each Zone Atlas contains 400 dpi scanned images of vintage 1876 county maps that are organized and presented in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). Original paper source quality varied from county to county; however, every effort has been made to retain the integrity of the original maps during conversion to digital format.
Each county map may include the following 19th century features:
* roads, railroads and canals
* cities, towns and villages
* post offices and government sites
* one-room schoolhouses, churches and cemeteries
* rivers, streams and ferries
* industrial sites, furnaces and mills
* early homesteads and farms
* and much, much more
The Adobe Acrobat Reader for MS Windows is needed to view, zoom, pan and print from the PDF map images contained in this atlas, and is included free on each CD. No other software is necessary.
