John O. Morris (Uncle Buck) father of the late lamented John H. Morris,
died at large wednesday, at the advanced age of 80 years, after a residence
in Evansville of 30 years. His disease was softening of the brain by old
age.
"Uncle Buck" came to this city in 1859 as carpenter of the J.L.Lord and
afterwards held the same position on the steamers Charlie Bowen, Courier,
Superior, Charmer, Curlew and Ida Heilman. He was born in 1805 in Maryland
and had been connected with the river for over sixty years. The old gentleman
had been in feeble health for a number of years but up to 1880 was actively
engaged at his trade. He leaves five daughters who live in this city. He
is well known by all the river men of this community.

On page 486 of this book (published in 1898, reprinted in 1973) is an
illustration which shows four members of the Elliott Family.
If anyone has access to this book, and an scanner, I would GREATLY
appreciate a scanned image of this illustration (via email, of course).
(contact me privately at wsbsmith(a)intelos.net, and we'll talk details).
The man in the lower left hand corner, Peter Elliott, built my house
in Lynchburg, Virginia, and I would be especially pleased to have an quality

Surname: Strasser, Bischoff, Schoenlaub, Peetz
-------------------------
This family had a long history from 1851 into the
mid-1900s n Evansville. Xavier and Anna Maria May
Strasser came from Wuerttemburg with their large family in 1846,going first
to Cincinnati then to
Evansville where Xavier died in 1869 and Anna Maria
died in 1888. I have their wills. Appollonia b 1836
married Emil Schoenlaub in 1853. He died 36 years
later on their anniversary. Herman born 1838 married Barbara Euler in 1866.
Franziska b 183? married Emil
Bischoff. Josephina born 1833 married Charles Peetz July 11, 1855 Evansville.
For a while they lived at St. Louis in 1860. Paul b 1840 married Martha
Jane Palmer there May 4, 1864 while he was a gunboat pilot in the Civil
War for the Union in the 11th Mississippi Squadron. Sophie born 183? and
Philip Horwitz were married in St. Louis December 1860. Jacob born 1831
married Philomena Sachs in 1851 in Jefferson Co. Mo.
He was naturalized in Evansville in 1853, as was Xavier.
Does anyone have other information on this family?
Does anyone know the cemetery in Chicago where Appollonia was buried on
May 4, 1917? She died at son
Alexander S. Schoenlaub's home and Josephine Damm
her daughter took her to Chicago for burial. Alex
worked for the L&N railroad in the shop at Evansville.
Is there a marriage record for Josephine?
James Eddington, a railroad engineer and Lillie Strasser were married and
lived at New Albany IN ca 1910. Lillie fell in a theater and suffered the
amputation of a leg. An infant survived her for 5 months, then expired.
Hattie her sister lived with them for a while, later
married Theodore A. Hansen who was born in Warrick Co.
to William and Louise Hansen. Louise died, William remarried and the children
were raised by Nora Hansen
Schwartz, the oldest child. She is buried in the
Old Lutheran Cemetery.
Theodore was christened in the Lutheran Church.
Does anyone known when James Eddington died or if
any of his and Lillie's children grew to maturity?
I am looking for Strasser family I never knew except
on paper.
I don't know about Vanderburgh County but there was a Neu family in Wabash
County, IL (just northwest of Vanderburgh County, IN). My ancestral
information on this family ends with Andrew Neu [7 Jun 1859 - 18 Aug 1940].
I don't have a death place for Andrew Neu my information notes that a son
of Andrew, Adam Neu [1888-1956] "lived on the home place, Wabash Co., IL".
You may find a daughter of Adam Neu on my web site at:

I am seeking information regarding my great-grandfather, William Joseph
Neu. We believe that he was born somewhere in Indiana or Kentucky in 1857.
We know that he had a brother, John, who eventually moved to California.
He also had two sisters, one of whom was named Emma. William's father was
a teacher who taught at a girl's academy, possibly in Indiana.
William married Ella Elisabeth Colvin in Champaign County, Illinois in
approximately 1892. Shortly thereafter, they relocated to Philipsburg,
Montana, where William died in approximately 1945.
Does anyone have information of a connection to the Neu family who resided
in Vanderburgh County in the latter part of the 1800's?
Thank you.
Hello all. Thanks to a fellow list member, I now have a death date for the
man who built my house in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1816.
Peter Elliott, Sr. (born Va.) aged 88 1/2 years, died 6/24/1863
He is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville, Indiana
Are there indexed obituaries for Evansville in the 1860's? If so, I would
really appreciate it if someone could do a search for me. It is my hope that
the obituary (if one exists) may give some much needed information about
Peter Elliott's life (especially his occupation), which is tremendously
important in our restoration effort.
Thank you in advance, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

In the book, 'History of Evansville and Vanderburg County, Indiana by Joseph P
Elliott. 1898. on page 487, there is a lengthly sketch of the Elliott family, of
whom Peter is the father of Joseph, the author. The book is full of errors as
it was written by Joseph at a very advanced age. But I would guess the family
data is correct. It appears there were four wives. And he was a contractor and
builder ,later in Lexington, he added wagon making and blacksmithing . He also
owned slaves. When poor health came he found homes for his slaves and came to
Evansville where he lived with his son Joseph Peter Elliott. If you will email
me your address I will copy the whole sketch. Other wise I copied the whole book
from a film I got at the Family History Center of the Morman Church.I do not
think the book was ever reprinted. Nancy Hessel
