My William Nickels came from Laurens Co SC. Please search for the "Simpson
Genealogy" online and you can get most of the background that I have on his family.
Dr. Simpson married one of the Nickels daughters.
Credit is given to William Nickels for the first saw and grist mill to be built near
Dunlapsville IN. In fact, the source I have says that Mr. Dunlap purchased the mill from
Mr. Nickels. The town of Dunlapsville is named after Mr. Dunlap. This would be the
period of 1813-1821, when William Nickels' family moved to Parke [now Vermillion Co]
County and lived out their lives there.
My GGGrandfather was married to William and Elizabeth Nickels' daughter, Elizabeth.
Also Robert Norris married a Nickels daughter, Martha, in Fayette Co IN marriage records
1819.
Norris, Nickels, Manley, Hollingsworth were all part of the Carolina Colony who settled in
SE IN as early as 1803/4 and many of them moved to Parke and Vermillion Co IN in the early
1820's. Please see the 1807 IN Territorial Census, as all of them were in it. Some
of the Nickels family did stay in the vicinity, as an account of one James C Nickels
mentions his grandfather, William. They were a part of the history of the Dunlapsville
Presbyterian Church,also
Many of these sources can be found in the county libraries of Union and Fayette Counties
IN.
