POOR ASYLUM
Prior to 1836 paupers in Union, Fayette and Franklin counties were under the charge of
township officers.
In 1836 the three counties built a brick building on a farm in Fayette county that they
had purchased
jointly, sharing expenses for the inmates. In March 1857, Union County purchased the
interest in the farm
from Fayette and Franklin counties and they removed their paupers.
Union County operated the Fayette County farm until the spring of 1870 when a poor asylum
for Union
County was farm purchased from George W. Taylor. In March 1877, W.H.H Clark became
superintendent,.
at a salary of $500 per year, with fifteen paupers in the residence.
In 1975, the Union County Commissioners sold the buildings and 12 acres to a private
party. They have
Remodeled the small building, also known as a pest and jail house, into a residence
keeping a portion of the jail bars
intact. The commissioners rent the farm to the highest bidder.
Last Sunday, I came across a map showing the the joint poorhouse for Fayette and Union
counties located in Jackson Twp, Fayette County. The map was published in 1867. It appears
to have been located at the NW corner at the intersection of CR 400E and CR 650S. There
is an old, large brick farmhouse on this corner.
